I have IBS-D. Was diagnosed over 3 years ago. Have had it over 10 years. I am used to my IBS symptoms and am taking Lotronex and Donnatal for it. It is very severe and makes my life miserable.
I went to my follow up appointment with my Gastroenterologist today after having gone through an upper barium xray and an upper endoscopy with esophageal dilatation because I started experiencing pain in my upper abdominal area and even though I could swallow food, it felt harder to do so. This started up about a month ago. Never experienced acid reflux or hearburn.
My doctor told me that the barium xray shows a sliding hiatal hernia, and the exam during the endoscopy showed no ulcers, cancers, etc. He said that that the esophagus looked normal and I shouldn't have trouble swallowing. (I still have trouble swallowing meats and chicken, they feel like they get stuck in my throat, scaring me.) I cut everything up and chew thoroughly.
Anyways, my doctor prescribed Levsin (hyoscyamine sulfate), as he said that the upper esophagus is subject to spasms as is my lower colon. I was surprised by this, although I guess they are all connected.
Has anyone been on Levsin? I am only to take it when the spasms occur, and wondered what experience others have had taking this medication.
