Fasting for one day is no big deal. Really. If you eat lightly the day before it will probably be even easier (ie, don't try to front load your calories to compensate for your fast!). You can drink fruit juice and other things, so you won't be missing too many calories.
When I first had to get a colonoscopy I had similar questions. Lots of people are anxious about
the prep, and so the joke was "white wine and vodka are both clear liquids." Don't drink those, either. ;-)
Red juices and red jello are not recommended, because when the prep starts working and you start having red diarrhea you may panic that you're bleeding. I think the DRs are also concerned about
having red food coloring in your bowel, but I'm not sure.
My biggest issues with the prep are staying hydrated. The prep solution that cleans your bowel draws an incredible amount of water from your body, and I personally find it nearly impossible to maintain an adequate fluid balance. Last time I passed out the morning of my scope and had to go in earlier than requested to get an IV of fluids. So drink drink drink, even if you think you cannot take another drop of water or juice.
