I don't go to the ER unless I need stitches or have hit my head or pass out from dehydration. The ER is not the place to go for pain, in my opinion.
However, a 64 year old woman complaining of gut pain should first be screened for cardiac enzymes. If you're not having a heart attack, go home and call your GI.
I'm sorry your GI left his practice, but I'll bet there are other GIs who can take on your case. It's probably time for a colonoscopy.
