Hi, I am 43, I have had symptoms for a few years. My dr. listened to my symptoms, diagnosed IBS, and gave me Pepcid and Belladonna (Phenabarbitol). I only take them and (tums and gas-x) when needed. (Phena very rarely)  What I am wondering is, I have burning in my gut below my belly button. All the other symptoms match up with you here on the sight. Does anyone else have a painful burning? mad   Thank you all for your help!!

Hi Jenny,
Welcome to the forum
I'm curious what tests, if any, did your doctor do to diagnose you? Of course, IBS can cause all kinds of pains and they do migrate around the abdominal area however IBS should be diagnosed on exclusion only and tests should be done to rule other things out. Of course that is not always done which is why people get misdiagnosed all of the time. Did you tell your doctor exactly where the pain was? Also how is the medication working for you?

Hi Jenny,
Welcome to the site!
I don't know about Belladonna but I doubt the Pepcid is what is making your gut burn. Is this burning sensation listed as a side effect for Belladonna? If you just noticed this burning since you started on these 2 meds I would call your doc or pharmacist and ask about it. I'm sorry, I am at a loss - I have never heard of a burning gut (only heartburn).
I really do hope someone comes around who might be able to shed some light. Please call your doc about this because it can be some sort of reaction or side effect to your meds.
Good luck.

Thank you for writing me. No testing except blood test and urinalysis. I don't go to the dr very often. I have had the burning for a long time, well before I took any medications except Tums. I was having the burning (like what I think an ulcer would feel like), constipation, bloating, and not being able to eliminate completely.
When I felt a big lump inside (you can see it when I lay down flat on my back) low near the pubic bone I got scared with the other symptoms and went in. Dr. scheduled a cat scan the next day. Turns out I have a 9 cm fibroid in my uterus. Now I am going to have a hysterectomy. I've heard that fibroids can cause some similar symptoms to IBS.
I don't want to be a hypocondriac, but should I push for a colonoscopy? The burning is concerning me only because I don't see anyone else with that as a symptom with IBS.
Thank you.

Jenny, it sounds like the burning may be a product of your uterine problems.  Just venturing a guess there based on the location of the burning and its proximity to your uterus.  Have you asked your doctor about whether the fibroid could be causing this pain?  Did they mention anything about endometriosis?

The gynocologist said that the fibroid was probably causing some of the symptoms, and the IBS some as well. I never asked her about the burning. Neither dr mentioned endometriosis. What's that?

Check out this Mayo Clinic site...it has some good information on endometriosis.

Jenny, it also looks like uterine fibroids like you described can cause similar symptoms.  Check this out:
