No doubt my digestive system is not working properly. I am just so frustrated. I have fibromyalgia and the stomach issues started around the same time that did (although I did get upset stomach alot as a child). I'm 29 and I spend a lot of time managing my health. I take medications that can constipate, so I am sure that helps nothing. I seem to alternative between constipation and diarrhea. Generally, I will start a bowel movement that seems normal but always ends with cramping diarrhea. I've tried a no sugar, no dairy (I have dairy allergy), gluten free diet and I was less bloated but I still found the bowel movements to be the same. I had surgery to get a fissure fixed over a month ago and the surgeon said that unless I can resolve these issues it might happen again - well that is nice, but how do I resolve them? I've mentioned several times to my doctor - getting various responses, such as Oh bloating is from your endometriosis, or try probiotics, or sounds like irritable bowl. I guess my question is should I seek out a specialist stomach Dr? I really don't want to develop anymore fissures or hemorrhoids.

Have you had a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy? If not then I strongly suggest you set that up right away, your descript
ion could easily be Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis, not trying to scare you but check out my signature at the bottom of my reply........
DX with Crohn's Disease in 1991 shortly after becoming ill. CD was affecting small and large bowel & anus (perianal crohn's skin tags) & rectum for first 2 yrs of becoming sick, CD remained constant in colon (Crohn's colitis) & anus with anal tags, intolerant to oral meds. Currently on Humira (Feb 2014) once a week and B12, Vitamin A and Omega's daily. In remission but trying to combat IBS D/C.

Thanks for your reply. My surgeon asked me if ulcerative colitis ran in my family...as far I know it doesn't, but colitis does. I thought that he would do a colonoscopy before the surgery. Maybe I should have pushed for it. But I think you are right that I need to get one. My fissure actually started as a skin tag....I was told it was hemorrhoids (which I have too), but I got a second and third opinion and that DR finally said oh its a fissure. I had ridiculous pain and the misdiagnosis kept me in pain so much longer than was necessary.

Hmmm....what kind of colitis runs in your family?
My mom had ulcerative colitis and I have crohn's disease, which actually started with perianal crohn's skin tags that every doc who looked at them told me they were hemmies (this was bac when I was a teenager, that's when they started but I didn't get internal CD until a yr and a half after having my first baby---had baby in 1990 and then sick internally with CD in 1991 but not DX until April 1992) I technically have crohn's colitis as it mainly affects my colon, on and off in the rectum (but in remission with Humira now) with crohn's colitis it's fairly common to get the perianal crohn's skin tags as well.
I've never known that fissures can start out as a skin tag, I had fissures too early when I first became sick but I had the perianal crohn's skin tags long before I ever had any fissures, fissures didn't happen until I was sick internally with CD and having frequent D caused the fissures...my perianal crohn's skin tags would come and go all on their own before my first pregnancy and every doc that saw them said they were hemmies but they weren't...it didn't even make sense since I never had constipation or diarrhea issues when the anal skin tags first started to appear when I was a teenager, so believing they were hemmies, after I had my first baby the tags became even bigger and more bothersome then I started having lots of frequency issues but not and diarrhea, my stools were still normal and formed but I started having way more bowel movement urges and couldn't hold them in like I was always able to (my doc at the time, as well as the surgeon, totally disregarded the frequency issue I told them was happening) so still being told they were hemmies they banded them which they never should have done since they were what's called a flared state (large and hard) and since they banded them they've never gone away like they use to.
I think to be on the safe side you should get another opinion and ask the next GI about
perianal crohn's skin tags, they're distinctive looking (which is what pisses me off so much since they really don't resemble an actual hemmie) google pics of perianal crohn's skin tags and hemmies and you'll see there's quite a difference, but I got screwed over by a ton of useless docs (including the colon and rectum surgeon who should have known better at least that ended up being the dummy that banded my anal skin tags) so keep looking for answers. Crohn's can start off as constipation, not necessarily in all cases, but it did for me about
a month before all hell broke loose.
