I have 7 kids and 4 of them have irritable bowel syndrome. I wondered if anyone knew if you could pass this down to them from birth?

Any help with this would be appreciated.

As far as I know, IBS is not an inherited disease. I know IBD can be tho.

I struggled with IBS my entire life and my grandmother on my dad's side also has it. I don't think it's an inherited disease though. We've both been on a probiotic with an anti fungal for almost three years now. It's changed our lives and both of us are not completely symptom free but we're about 90% better. I had an immune system researcher of 28 years tell me it was the best out there. My kids take one every night before bed too. Get them on a good probiotic.

I know they say it is not inherited, but I will say every woman in my family on my mother's side has it. My grandmother, all 5 of my aunts, my mom and all my female cousins.

Ikingston - can you give me the brand of probiotic? I've researched for several months. Last month, finally decided on one - stayed on it for 30 days as advised - it worked a little bit but not to my satisfaction. This month I started on one that was "supposed" to be better and made for IBS, but it made my symptoms worse, so after 3 days, I went back to the original until I can find something better.

My some practitioners now believe that IBS can actually be caused by SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth), or imbalances in the gut's microbiome. That is definitely passed down from a mother to her child.
