Hello all,

I wanted to update you all on my doc appt from last week and what's been going on w/ me....

Yep, I've been diagnosed w/ IBS (though, I could have told them this 4 years ago LOL). While I already did have a good feeling, it is nice to finally have "something" to call it and I'm so glad I have such a supportive and understanding doctor!! She prescribed me Levsin(Hyoscyamine) to take on an as-needed-basis.

Has anyone else taken this rx?

Thanks for reading.... :-)

Hi mdgirl,
I don't take Levsin, I did for a while and it helped a little for me. I take Symax now which is just another type of antispasmodic as Levsin is. Different meds affect different people. Levsin is a very popular med for IBS sufferers so you probably will get some more info.

I just wanted to give you (((hugs))). While it could be worse, IBS is no picnic but you know that since you have been suffering for awhile. Yes it feels good to have a name and not be something that possibly is just "all in your head" as many people like to refer.

I have taken hyoscamine for gall bladder cramping and have taken it after having a severe reaction to sugar alcohols and I've never noticed it helped me at all. I don't know if maybe my pains were too much for my dosage, or what, but you may be different and react well to it. At the very least, it never made anything worse; I never had any side affects other than it making me sleepy.

Yep, I was on Levsin for 4 months and it did nothing for me but irritate my hiatal hernia and GERD. So, the doc switched me to Pamine Forte (5mg) and oh, buddy that stuff is waaaaaay too much for me!!!!! I almost went to the emergency room after taking that stuff. They say you get a dry mouth, but I was literally choking and gagging because I could not produce saliva at all!!! The more water I drank the worse I felt! My nose was so dry it burned and was bleeding. I kind of could not feel my body at all. I don't know......I felt horrible, but I also kind of felt like if I threw up I wouldn't even feel it! So, basically the doctor said it WAS too strong for me and I overdosed. So he switched me to the REGULAR Pamine (2.5 mg) and it's great so far! Just started taking it again, yesterday, and I haven't had any attacks, yet. I can't believe I even tried it again...but, it works great and I do get a dry mouth but it's definitely more tolerable than that Pamine Forte! That stuff is strong!!!

Good Luck with the Levsin. The only time it would EVEN TOUCH one of my attacks is when I would take 2. I would take one and not feel any relief at all so then when I take 2, and that would work but I would get a headache. The more you take, the more side effects you're likely to experience, that's all. I'm little so I get all the side effects of all meds!!!

I will say that having the Levsin was better than having nothing at all!! Maybe it was just the psychological comfort of knowing I had something in case I had an attack. I had fewer attacks....until my hiatal hernia started acting up from the Elavil. Then I got horribly sick and had to get another colonoscopy and endoscopy but it's finally getting better. This was back in October when I was really sick!
