Just thought to ask this forum about experiences with SIBO, and if so, how you treated it. I have had some symptoms arise after taking a course of heaving antibiotics post surgery. I think this has set the stage for some bacterial problems in the gut as my stool test now shows. I am taking the breath test now as that is the one that will tell if I do in fact have SIBO. But even so, the stool test shows things are out of balance. If anyone has an insights here, I would love to hear it.

Try a diet lower in carbohydrates, especially sugars. SIBO feeds off carbs. There is a antibiotic that kills it, I didn’t have much luck with it but you may be different. Atpfter the 2 weeks on the antibiotic you will probably be on a lower carb eating plan and some supplements to make sure it doesn’t come back. Then will add probiotics to repopulate good bacteria. A naturopath Dr will be able to help.

Why is there not a SIBO specific forum in here? FYI, I have SIBO and a little UC, and some horrendous fungal / load infections. I believe the SIBO is a symptom of disbiois, and I think my disbiosis came from a high toxic load (lead and mercury) and both my thyroid and my pituitary got toxic and slowed, causing the disbiosis. everything we suffer from is related to Toxic load! I made some progress on the typical antibiotics and they do help, but I was also taking 4 different herbals, still am. I do and would again take them all, I do everything all at the same time. My thyroid was basically not working, fix that. I swish for 2 min and spit: 70 prof tequila, 3x day to keep my mouth and thyroid working well. I swish Lactobacillus acidophilus at bedtime. The most effective part of my program is food grade 33% hydrogen peroxide, and I would fell safe taking that forever and it will never harm me. I drink 12 drops 3x day, 30 min pre meals. Theres another sibo site that mentions this.

I have been dealing with SIBO for some time now and for now I am managing to control it with a broad spectrum approach suited to me specifically. Here are some links to sites with comprehensive information that you may find helpful:

I have been very frustrated by this condition. I have done Xifaxan, Berberine/Neem/ADP-delay release oreano oil as a combo, Candibactin AR and BR combo, but eventually it returns. I am intolerant to the prokinetics recommended which are said to be a must. Microbiome Labs has some supplements and a lab test which sound promising, but I am introducing them very slowly and cannot say as yet if they are helping. Also, there is a lab test BiomeFx which does whole genome sequencing of your microbiome and reports results which can be used to guide changes in lifestyle, diet, and supplements to improve your microbiome. You can find more information here: www.biomefx.com. Look under education for a interpretation and recommendation guide.
I just did this test and am awaiting the results but have looked at sample results and am hopeful it will give me some clues as to how I might improve my IBS and SIBO

Hi Gladioli,

How was your experience with the antibiotic Xifaxan. My gastro doctor is recommending it. I am very sensitive on any meds. I am doing the LOW FODMAP diet and this had helped me. I eat papaya at least half a cup and helps too.

All the best.

I have severe MCS, so am reactive to many things particularly pharmaceuticals. That being said, I did fine with the Xifaxan, but the herbals seemed to do a better job for me. If your insurance covers Xifaxan it is certainly worth trying. Recently I wanted to try the Xifaxan again for a relapse of SIBO, but my insurance no longer covers it, so not really a choice for me any longer.

Also, if you gained improvement with the FODMAPS diet you may find the digestive enzyme FODMATE from Microbiome Labs helpful. I have not tried it yet, but it was specifically formulated for short term use in those that have problems with digestion of high FODMAP foods.

I finally received the results for my BiomeFx test. Those results have given me numerous interventions/steps I can take (lifestyle, diet, supplements) to improve my specific situation. Just something to keep in mind if the Xifaxan does not resolve your symptoms.

Hi Gladioli,

Thank you for the sharing regarding Xifaxan and other info. I am doing well so far with the Low Fodmap diet. That's good information about FODMATE. I will check on this. How long did you take it. Recently, I have difficulty taking capsules, so hope will manage. Appreciate the idea. Hopefully Xifaxan will work.

I lost so much weight because I got scared eating. Getting heartburns and getting anxious due to food not digesting properly. My gastro doctor just keeps giving me PPI meds. Diagnosed with GERD. But the PPI made me worst. Thru prayers it give me strength, I mange to wean form PPI meds but it had other side effects which made my system developed food sensitivities. And, after a while the GERD turned to be SIBO. Then, after a year of not be able to eat most food, a friend of mine suggested the LOW FODMAP diet. Then that's the time I got to eat a bit more. Then last week I got a better Gastro doctor suggesting also the LOW FODMAP diet. This gastro doctor believes on SIBO. The previous gastro doctor i had, just keep prescribing the PPI meds.

Not an easy situation to be in. Thank you for the time sharing your experience. All the best.

I did not make headway with the usual SIBO treatments or FODMAPS diet so I had to take another approach. Please take a look at the list of links I posted earlier in this thread. I am slowly working my way onto The Gut Restoration Protocol from Microbiome Labs and am making slow steady progress. In the beginning I used their product MegaGuard which can be helpful for SIBO as well as slowly introducing their products Megasporebiotic and HU58. After I am on the full doses of those two products I will add MegaPre (prebiotic) and MegaMucosa to help heal the gut lining. They are one of the few probiotics used successfully by those with SIBO, at least that is what I have been hearing. SIBO can be a complicated condition to treat because it can a number of underlying causes.
I finally received my results for the BiomeFx test I mentioned previously. The results included actionable lifestyle, diet and supplement changes I can make which I am finding very helpful. Whether those changes have a significant positive affect on my SIBO situation is too early to say.

Re SIBO
Just took test and SIBO negative-like you after darn antibiotics. (avoid doxycycline at all costs!)
Probably have IBS only.

SIBO and IBS symptoms very similar. Following worked best for me:

Cocktail of 8 ounce water-Metamucil fiber one teaspoon-Gaviacell packet powder -Align-S Boulardi (?) pill-

Keep food diary-dairy-tomato high acid-coffee so I compromised with one cup tea-on line lists

Run all this past gastroenterologist

Stress: big factor if hot reactor can sabotage everything else-meditation online Insight great!

Getting old sucks! Hang in there!

Hi Gregory 11,

The antibiotic I was taking for three months in a row had started all these.
Now dealing with SIBO. Good you had your test done.

Will be seeing my Gastro Doctor next week. I just had my Pancreas stool test and Praise God it is normal.
I am still on Low Fodmap from time to time. Doing well on that. If I eat wrong food have to deal with LBM (Runs) or Constipation.
I praise God, that I can eat and not losing weight anymore. That is a great improvement. Before, It was so tough not eating and getting dizzy due to low food intake. Having food that I can eat (LOW FODMAP) is a blessing for me.

All the best.

Hi Tu Wang
Glad you are doing well. My antibiotic from hell was doxycycline which burned antral part of stomach. First gastritis then IBS.

Antibiotics can be life savers but some docs prescribe them like candy and micro biome wrecked.

Hang in there!

Hi All,

Update... I had my Cat Scan, pancreas stool test and heart monitor came back normal. Praise God for that. IBS/SIBO had caused so much weight loss for me. Now, I am maintaining my weight. Happy not to loss anymore.
Per my gastro doctor continue on my LOW FODMAP diet, eat small portion and re interduce new food small portion one at a time.

All the best to you all.

Hi Gladioli and Gregory 11,

Any update as how you guys doing?

I was doing well with my LOW FODMAP diet and had few stressful situations and been having bad heartburns and discomfort that leads to panic and anxiety. My gastro doctor advised to take heartburn meds and probably treat SIBO with Rifaximin. Not sure how this works. But will see her next week.

Also, I have to do the breath test and acid test. Will update you. Thank you.

Hi all. I know most of this thread is older, but I struggled with IBS for many years. Finally found a better GI doc and had an upper endoscopy and in addition to testing for H. Pylori and celiac, he got a fluid sample from my upper small intestine. It showed I had SIBO. I'm on 2 weeks of Augmentin. I have 4 more days to go. Before the antibiotic, I had constant diarrhea forever, uncontrollable burping...but the worst was I was having tons of irregular heartbeats. These episodes of irregular heartbeats have happened many times over the past 25 years. I've been checked out in the past for them, and my heart was okay. I've come to believe that it's associated with my GI tract. I'm an alien and have all sorts of weird things. ;) Anyhow........a couple days ago everything started to settle down. But I did have a migraine aura when all the irregular heatbeats stopped, so I don't know how much hormone fluctuation plays into this. I'm almost 72, so I don't know if I even still have hormones....haha . You can look online for some reputable articles about SIBO's cause, treatment, etc. I think it's finally getting the attention it deserves.
It's weird how the small intestine has been so overlooked for so long. I guess it's just a hard place to get to.

I will pay more attention to what I eat now, even though I've always eaten a lot of veggies. I did have a sweet tooth, which was probably really bad and I would crave carbs, even though I didn't feel so good afterwards. I'm trying to get more in touch with what makes me feel bad, since I've always been an emotional eater.

I'm glad I found this threat and hope that people continue to post on SIBO.

Hi again. I know this thread isn't real up-to-date, but it's good info. The small bowel seems to be a no-man's-land as far as accessibility and interest by docs. I have had an overwhelming craving for sweets forever. I hate it. It's like an addiction. But.....since being diagnosed with SIBO, it makes me wonder if the bad organisms were making me hungry, to get what they needed.
As I said earlier, I found out I had SIBO recently, got treated with Augmentin, then nystatin for oral thrush and for a couple weeks, my bowels worked better than they had in years. No more burping or irregular heartbeats.
Unfortunately, it's slowly coming back. sad I eat pretty healthily.....lots of veggies, low carbs, etc.....but dang.......after Thanksgiving I fell off my healthy wagon. Maybe that caused the regression? And here comes Christmas. I'm famous for some of the sweets I make for friends and family. Dang. Anyhow.......It's just all so interesting how the body works. I'm glad I found a GI doc who seems to be really up on this. If the diarrhea comes back, I'll visit him again. On my visit last week, he told me about a patient who kept having the SIBO recur and I forgot to ask him what test showed this........but he said one small portion of the man's small bowel just wasn't working. So he convinced the surgeons to remove that small bowel section..........and it cured the guys SIBO. Hmmm.....I would be willing to consider that.
But I'm glad there are places like this to hear about others who have it, and what has and hasn't worked for them.

Hi,
CathA, Thank you for posting your experience.

I been to Gastro doctors, endoscopy, cat scan and blood test. Praise God all's normal. The thing is why I feel horrible most of the days. Number one factor.... diet. I eliminated, Gluten, Sugar, Dairy and Soy. This had helped but I lost a lot of weight. LOW FODMAP diet but have to reintroduce fiber food possible or constipation becomes an issue. Gas X have helped on some days.

All the best.
