I have had UC for more than 20 years but it has been in remission for the last 4.
I sporadically get HUGE problems with gas which smells horrific and loose stools, which also smell bad. This isn't UC as colonoscopy shows zero inflammation. At it its worst, I can be passing gas literally every 2 minutes. It gets so bad, that it keeps me awake at night.
I avoid social events because of it. It is so awful.
I read about SIBO and how antibiotics can help with symptoms. I spoke to my GP and she refused to give me antibiotics. So, I went ahead and bought them online. I purchased Azithromycin 500mg tablets (4). I took 1g on day 1, then 500mg on days 2 and day 3.
My symptoms had almost completely resolved by the second day. It was incredible. I could not believe it. Huge relief.
I was then okay for a few months and then I had another episode (after eating spiced food that didnt agree with me). I again took the Azithromycin which I purchased again, and I was okay again. Although it took a little longer for me to feel better this time.
I just had this happen a third time a couple of weeks ago, and did the same. I feel fine now. I cannot buy anymore Azithromycin as the website says I have bought too much in a 12 month period - I also have to falsely say I have a STD (Chlamydia) in order to buy them, as they wont sell them otherwise, which is not great.
So, what is going on? Is this SIBO? I know I have IBS (as well as UC) but I didnt think antibiotics could help with IBS? So does it seem more likely it is SIBO? My GP said she cant give me a SIBO breath test, and I have to go back to my Gastro - that appt is not until mid June.
Has anyone else experienced the same? I would be so grateful for any advice.
