Hi All,

I am a 37 yr old male and have experienced two bouts of diverticulitis over the past 6 months.  I am scheduled for a colon resection in early April.  I also have a history of deep vein thrombosis (legs and lungs) which has resulted in me being on Coumadin for life.  Because of the fact that I will have to go off of my blood thinner for the resection, they are also doing an appendectomy to reduce the chance of an emergency appendectomy later in life.  Anyway, I'm just searching for information about the procedure, recovery, etc.  I will be having an "open" surgery (I spose meaning - not laproscopic).  Painful? Long recovery? Anybody have issues with bleeding (a concern of mine due to the coumadin issue).

Thanks in advance for any help/advice....any details would be very helpful.

Hi goodrumm68,
I have diverticulosis and was told that I will need surgery on my next bout of diverticulitis (had two bouts previously - one real bad was in hospital almost 2 weeks).  I am not sure about the procedure because I haven't experienced it but I want to say that I hope everything goes well for you.  You might have some luck posting your question in the ostomies forum https://www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=33.  I believe that we have one member here that has gone through the procedure however I don't think he posts too often anymore.  Good luck and please let us know how it goes.

Excellent.  Thanks so much.  I did post it there too. I'll continue to check back with this forum to see if there is any additional advice.

Thanks...

I'm glad they're getting your appendix too. I wanted them to take mine out when they got my gall bladder, since my dad's ruptured on him, but they couldn't do it with the same set of laproscopic incisions. It used to be, though, when they did have to cut you open, it was standard procedure to always take it out.

I hope your resection gets you fixed and you can go back to being normal again!

Oh, post your message on the Crohn's board. Crohnnies have to get resections quite a bit, unfortunately, so they can give you more information than here.
