I use this one restroom in the building where I work about 2-3 times a day with D.  Most of the time, there is no one in there and its usually because nature calls at the right times.  Today I had to go at the times when people came in to work, around lunchtime, and during a peak break time.  There were so many people in and out of there and I was hurting because I am not comfortable at all.  I think its just because I still am not used to the D so much again like before.  I was C for so long that I didn't have to worry about that much.  How do you all deal with the public restroom thing?  You'd think I wouldn't care when I got to go but I can't help but think people will "remember" me in the bathroom.  I have had IBS for 16 years and I still can't get over this part.

Awe Des, I feel for you. I'm the same way. I go from bathroom to bathroom looking for an empty one. Finally, when I can't take it anymore, I settle and grind my teeth the whole time. PUBLIC RESTROOMS SUCK!
Maybe all IBSers are like this... Maybe we all have a public bathroom phobia. I even have a hard time going at someone's house that only has 1 bathroom.

I think anyone that has bowel issues have to deal with this at one point in their life or another. It's embarassing but sometimes you just can't help it. A little tip from us on the Uc board, if you know you are going to make noise and you don't want anyone to hear, cough or flush the toilet. Also too, if it's the smell that worries you carry a non-aersol spray with you or they even have a product that you drip into the toilet before you go (sorry can't remember the name) but it's an enzyme that instantly "devours" the smell.

Lil, I can't agree more........public bathrooms are our worse enemy!

Yeah, I know. I don't have any thoughts about using the public restrooms in stores and places like that since I probably won't ever see those people again, its more just with my work's restroom. I know that I have to just live with it (I have been for a very long time) but I guess I'm just venting.

BTW... What drops are you talking about Sherry? What are they called and where do you get them? If I can find them, I will definitely want to stock up :)

omg i TOTALLY know how you feel about the public restrooms! see, i'm in high school, and at my school the teachers are SO anti-bathroom (except my english teacher, who also has IBS and knows my pain haha!) but see I kinda like, make alot of noise/take a long time in the restroom, and kids can be really immature and mean about things like leaving class for a long bathroom break. its just frustrating! and i HATE going in front of people..and even using hte bathrooms! (im a total germ-a-phobe! haha)

yeah  I guess that I have a different philosophy on this subject.  Nature is going to take its turn whenever my body decides it is time!  It waits for no time or place or person.  I live in a moderate sized town and know where each bathroom is.  If a store doesn't have public facilities, I don't frequent them.  As for odor, I can't control that either.  If someone is petty enough to hold that against me, that is their problem, not mine!  As my father always told me, there is more room on the outside than there is on the inside!!  I find a lack of public facilities to be my problem, not if I smell the place up in public.  I have even been known to use the mens room if needed!  Chesswoman

Giving it an extra flush will help too with the smell.

yeah im going to also have to side with most of you guys on this matter. I really dont like even using the bathroom anymore, I mean it doesnt matter where i am I just hate it. And i still consciously try to make a mental note of every bathroom within 500 ft of me wherever I am. This IBS thing is completely crippling to me, and sometimes i just want to die. but anyway when i go to the bathroom usually its in the monring and after lunch, so at lunchtime there a people in the bathroom, thankfuly its kinda noisy so no one notices me, but over the couple of years i have been dealing with this(about 3) I have gained incredible with Gods help, over the area down there, so i can almost decide when I have gas, and the time i have diarrhea. Like, one time after soccer the other day i had to go real bad, so i prayed and God helped me hold it in. But i still had to go when i got back to school, but i waited till no one was around.

Yeah, I need a vacation from the bathroom

Hey guy's I gotta tell you I was the same before I got ill with UC. now I only care about making it to the bathroom, hey I can't control it coming out :-) as for smells, I find that if you spray some air freshner before and after you go noone will smell anything other than air freshner.

Take care.

Oh Dodge, you were lucky. You should always go as soon as possible because it can and will come on out. Also, poop never "goes away" you might be able to resist the urge a while, but once it's there to be evacuated, it's there and needs to be let out.

AND if you are holding it back, never fart because that can let it right out.

Dansky,
I actually have UC (ulcerative proctosigmoiditis) too but I still have the anxiety. I am only like that though at work, anywhere else I don't really care who hears, smells, etc. You are right, just knowing where and if there is a bathroom available is good enough in any other situation.

Thanks everyone for the input. I knew you guys would understand. :)

Of course I prefer to have the bathroom to myself too.  We have two bathrooms in our house and I'll go to the one that's the furtherest from wherever my fiance is, because I don't want to stink it up around him.  Peeing, I'll do that in the bathroom just off our bedroom and not even shut the door or care (he doesn't care to do it in front of me either), but when it comes to poop, we both shut the door and go away from the other person.  Don't ask me why peeing is okay to do around other people, but pooping is not.

I don't like to go in a public restroom, especially one that contains people I know or work with, but I'd prefer it to be full and busy than to just have one person other person in it.  My reasoning behind this is that no one can know where the smell/sound is coming from.  Yes, I have timed my poops to be covered by the sound of flushing toilets and running water.  And you can always flush your toliet multiple times and it not sound out of place in a restroom that's really busy (unlike when there's only one other person in there).
