Hey everyone.

I have a quick question...I just started eating this special fiber cereal (FiberOne..its digusting but hopefully it'll help with my D) and today, I've had like nasty green poop. Like, this color green. AND I have horrible horrible gas pain..that kind that feels like little knives are stabbing you and it only abates when you lie down or stretch. Is that normal for starting to take in alot of fiber? I also had an apple today and wheat bread..I think those have fiber in them too. Has anyone had this problem of bad gas when starting a fiber regimen?

Yes, it is not that unusual. I don't know about the green poop though. You need to add fiber slowly. I am having a problem adding fiber also. i took Benefiber and it really cramped me up. I guess you have to stick with it. I agree Fiber One is yucky. You might try the Kashi cereals as they are tastier and full of fiber. I love the Kashi clusters and can eat it like candy. Most stores have it.

I can remember pooping green when I was a kid, but I can't remember what it was that I ate that caused it. I know babies will poop green when they eat peas, but most adults don't (unless they eat a lot) because their intestines absorb it better. But there could be a fiber-green poop connection there. I guess it depends on what plants they get their fiber from and what food coloring they use.

Apples give most all of us bad gas by themselves. You may want to lay off those while you are starting the cereal. Wheat bread is generally low in fiber unless it's whole grain bread (not the same as whole wheat) or specially made with extra fiber.

I meant to say whole grain but it came out whole wheat..haha! Yeah...i'd really rather not eat the nasty FiberOne but my mom is adamant about me eating it..thinks its gonna miraculously heal me. Right.

blondie,
Green poop can happen for a number of reasons. Eating something green can do it, eating anything purple can do it too (I love grape juice and it comes out green) and the bile in your intestines is green so if your transit time is fast it could be it.

I agree with the others. Fiber should be introduced slowly because it will cause horrible gas and pains for you if taken too much just starting out. Like Keri said, apples too seem to give a lot of us problems. Just see about taking it slowly.

Oh, I just ate an apple after reading that someone else suggested a Red Delicious apple every day. You can't win with this stupid problem. Look for other ways to get fiber that taste better. There are some tortillas on the market that are low in calories and high is fiber. La Toleca makes one that is 50 calories and has 8 grams of fiber. 2 of those will taste better and probably not bother you as much as the Fiber One. I agree that stuff is awful. I would rather drink Metamucil. They also have some pretty good cookies from Metamucil that work pretty well. I think it is the way the fiber is introduced to the body.

According to one of the major IBS websites you should eat soluble fiber always first and more white stuff like white bread, rice, noodles, etc. It seem everyone has their own triggers which is precisley why we this is so darn difficult to get under control.

Make sure is not something else like C Diff (clostridium difficile) which is caused after antibiotic treatment. Have you been on antibiotics lately. Hopefully its just ibs because c diff can be a real pain.
