I take the antispasmodic "symax sl" which has helped me. I only take it when I am getting the bad cramping (with or without D) and it seems to work pretty fast especially since its sublingual. Are you thinking about asking your doc about taking them?

Just a word of advice, not all spasmodics work for every person. I have taken hyoscamine on several occasions, sublingual and regular pill, and it has never helped me any. If your doctor prescribes you an antispasmodic, ask him to only prescribe you a small amount, or ask the pharmacy to only fill half the prescription until you are sure it will work (why waste the money?). If it doesn't work, call the doctor back and make him give you another kind--there are a number of different kinds out there. So just keep trying until you find one that works. For some people the hyoscamine works; for me it didn't. But definitely don't give up on the anti-spasmodic concept if your first brand doesn't work.

I hope it works for you. There are several people on the board that said it works like a charm for them. For me and some others, it doens't do anything. Just know you have options if it doesn't!

Do those of you that take antispasmotics have IbS D or IBS C. I have been given Hyoscomine to help with the gas or when I feel sort of tight. It doesn't always work. I mean severe gas and it really gives me blurred vision. It is very inexpensive. It is generic for Levsin and I took it subligually. I was just given a prescription for Donnatal which has hyoscomine in it but also phenobarbital and atropine. That has me worried a little especilly the atropine as that can cause bad drying and blurred vision. I would really like to hear from someone that has really good success with an antispasmodic and what type of IbS they have. i haven't heard of Symac though.

I'm afraid I can't help you with that part about an antispasmodic that works--I never got one that did--but I had diarrhea. They had me take it thinking it would stop the intense pain I had and the diarrhea that the cramping was supposedly bringing on. But it never stopped my gall bladder from spasaming. I don't know if that's because it wasn't strong enough, didn't work on me or wasn't meant to stop an angry gall bladder. It didn't do anything for the diarrhea, either.

Come to think of it, I tried a few of them a while back when I had accidenly gotten into some sugar alcohol and it didn't stop my intestines from feeling like I had a trapped bird in there trying to get out. Didn't stop the pain or the diarrhea either. Either it's not for treating sugar alcohol reactions, or it doesn't work on me. Given the former failing, I'm thinking it just doesn't work on me.

hey atledgirl,

i'm afraid like Keriamon, anti-spasmodics don't seem to do anything for me. Mind you i've only tried two types one of which was colofac - but no joy. Could be worth a go for you tho as we are all different!

I found a heating pad as effective as anything for the cramping plus a Tylenol. Let's face it they really don't understand this "syndrome"

I find that dicyclomine (Bentyl) works better than hyoscyamine (Levsin); the Levsin dried me up but I don't have any side effects from the Bentyl and it does help with minor cramping.

What dosage of the Bentyl works for you?  I have a prescription of 20mg and it doesn't seem to help.

20 mg is the recommended dose.  Sometimes I've doubled up, though, and taken 40.

Thanks Sarita.  Does 20mg or 40mg make you sleepy?

Nah, not really.  I suppose it could have that effect but I've never experienced it!

Levsin drys out my mouth, eyes and lungs something I cannot afford to have happen. Bentyl can also but some people have less side effects. It also gives me blurred vison and makes me look like I am on drugs by increasing the size of the pupils. It can make you sleepy and you should be careful with alcohol. Any drug with ine at the end or ime can make you drowsy and dry you out. Just the nature of the beast which is why they will warn you about lung disease, glaucoma and prostate problems.
