I have had IBS for several years now. Before being diagnosed, I spent my day plotting strategies that would keep me close to restrooms, using those restrooms 5,7,10 times a day, and trying not to be too obvious when cramping made it impossible for me to walk.

Fortunately, Immodium helps me significantly. I needed to take Imodium daily at first, but then I eliminated dairy products from my diet, and now I can maintain some degree of normalcy with Immodium three or four times a week. Courage, IBS sufferers, it can be managed.

But I have a question -- on three occasions (spaced about a year apart) I have hadf situations where I experienced some severe cramping, feel nauseated, and then pass out. When I come to, the diarrhea and the vomiting are epic for about an hour. Then everything rights itself, and I'm good to go for another year.

My doctor can't find an explaination. I think it is related to IBS, although I've seen no information that lists the possibility of passing out as a side effect of IBS.

Anybody out there have any similar experience?

I think Sarita has blacked out before, but I think her's is due solely to the pain. Does your pain get that bad? You could also black out due to dehydration, but I think from your post you indicate the diarrhea starts after the blackout?

Have you been checked for any sort of mineral or vitamin imbalances? I seem to recall that you can blackout due to a lack of some mineral or vitamin, but I don't know which one(s).

I assume you've also been tested for hypo- and hyper-glycemia both?

To the person who posted a reply: sorry, I inadvertantly deleted your comment. Dehydration seems a possible candidate. The pain is not severe enough to cause me to pass out.

Interesting thought about the mineralimbalance. I'll do more checking there.

Thanks for the comments, and I again apologize for accidently deleting your post.

Hi Bernie-

What about your blood pressure? Low BP could cause you to faint. I went to a neurologist cause I feel dizzy alot and once actually blacked out. He said that it is similar to some people fainting when they see blood or something gory; that my nausea and the panic plus the low BP could have caused me to black out. Not to mention the constant diarrhea leaving me dehydrated & malnourished.

I have had the near passing out thing myself, and when I told this to my doc, he said that I might very well do just that. Didn't seem that surprised nor concerned for that matter.  He said that there is a nerve that runs through your belly and when the cramping is severe enough it triggers this nerve and it causes a drop in blood pressure.  I forget the name for this nerve, but it has happened to me more than a few times.  I feel for ya!

I have almost passed out with acid reflux. Had to hang on to friend and once to counter to keep from going down. It just spread thru my body, legs and arms all went weak. Are you thinking about the Vagus nerve?

Hi Aser,
FYI.... You did not "delete" Keriamon's (1st) post to you. You can delete your own post only. The Admin and Moderators are the only ones capable of deleting posts other than their own. I am assuming you clicked on the thumbs down icon in her post and are now "Ignoring" her. To rectify this you can go to "Control Panel" (upper left hand corner of this page) and then "Edit Ignored Users" (right side of the page). From there you can delete her from your Ignore list. I hope that helps!

All very good information (including the admin bit that relieves me of the quilt of being rude).

Thanks much.
