Ok heres my question since I am new to the Metamucial thing....I started taking it hoping to get more bulk in my stool and also cut down on the number of times per day I was going. Now in my case when I say "D" its not like the all watery kind I guess i should say its more or less formes but its all in little pieces not bulk. Ok so I have been taking Metamucial since Monday and when I take it I seem to be ok with everything but like this morning I forgot to take it and it actually seemed like I went more times than usual..I think I went like 3 times in 3 hrs...and still have an urge to go again...dont feel completely empty. So I just took my glass of Metamucial and now I will see how I do the rest of the day.My symptons could be a little more worse than normal because I am kind of nervous and stuff about starting a new job on Monday after 18 years so im thinking once I start and settle in I will be ok..when my nerves calm down. To other Metamucial users do you think it would be ok to take my Metamucial 1st thing in the morning(when I am at my worse) and then again maybe at lunch time to get me thru the rest of the day? I will also have my Lomotil tablets on hand in case I really need them.

Thanks in advance!

Hi gymrat,
The best thing is to actually just experiment. I actually take my doses 2 times a day, one in the late morning around lunch time and the other in the evening before bed. That way works great for me but I realize everyone is different. It sounds like the fiber is working well for you. I'm shocked though that it worked so fast. Usually it takes a while to start working but thats great. Your system probably moves very quickly and you are drinking it so that tends to work faster. If the fiber isn't doing its job in the morning, you may want to try and take it before bed to see if that helps with your mornings.
Take Care

Thanks you Dbab....But it is ok to take the Metamucial on a daily basis then correct? And j ust to confirm this shouldnt make me go more times per day right...Im hoping it is going to add some bulk to my stool and in return cut down on the # per day I need to go?  Reasonable or no?? And actually your saying that over the coarse of the next week or so it may work better for me as long as I keep taking it??

Metamucil is fiber and the RDV on fiber is 30 grams per day give or take. It should add bulk to your stool. How many times do you go a day now? Doctors say normal is anywhere between 3 times a day to 3 times a week so everyone is different. Its better to start off slow and work your dosage up for fiber since it does cause gas problems in the beginning.

currently I am going sometimes depending on what I eat 4-5 times per day or if its a good day then usually in the morning a few times and then maybe once untill evening. Now I went like 3 times this morning in like 3 hrs I took Metamucial at 11:00am and it is now 11:00pm and I didnt go at all in those 12hrs..I felt a little urge to go but when I hit the toilet nothing....So would you consider the Metamucial is working? Now I know when I wake up in the morning I will need to go a few times and I will take my Metamucial after I go and then see what happens the rest of the day.

Fibre supplements (as well via foods) should be added slowly to ones diet in order for your system to adjust with less repercautions(gas and bloating). This is the case for healthy peeps as well...supplements are safe (according to my GI) to take everyday...I have been for 3 yrs so far and no problems. :)

Hello again IBS-D twin!  (we are so much alike with symptoms!)

If you follow the high fiber plan like I posted in your other blog, it should lead you gradually into the high fiber diet.  Too much fiber too soon could give you a lot of gas and possible discomfort.

Try out the 3 week "get your body used to the fiber" plan...it really has helped me!

I know that red meat contains no fiber but what does that do for IBS? Will it add to the "D" or will it not matter weather you eat it or not? Also does anyone have any suggestions about foods I can take in my lunch on my new job...Im looking for foods that wont irritate me while im out and about...even just snacks or something. I was thinking like peanut butter and Jelly. See in my old job I really didnt worry about what I ate due to there were plenty of restrooms available. Any suggestions would be helpful....Thanks!

Gymrat,
PB&J really sits well with me, HOWEVER there are lots of folks that can't handle peanuts (nuts) because of the fat content. It's a "good" fat, but still fatty and greasy none the less. I can't eat pistachios or I'll for sure have D. You can try turkey or chicken sandwiches. Beware of mayo, cheese and veggies (lettuce & tomatoes).
Do you have access to a microwave? Chicken breasts with rice and well cooked veggies are pretty safe. I don't have a problem with pork either... pork chops and mashed potatoes are great. Pork chops & apple sauce are a definite NO-NO.
What about granola bars? I really like them and they don't give me trouble. It would seem to be OK for IBSers, but I'm really not sure. Unless of course you have a wheat/gluten intolerance - Stay away!
I'm sure others will be around to give you some tips.

Why not pork chops and applesauce? I eat a lot of applesauce. Is applesauce bad for you. I agree about the chicken etc, Whenever I get into one of my problem times I go to chicken, fish, potatoes, rice, cooked veggies. I was told no red meat as it never really digests in system just sort of ferments. Yuck.

Apples cause horrible gas cramps... Most people with digestive problems can't handle anything apple (including juice, sauce, even jam, etc.).
That's great, Canyon, that you seem to be able to tolerate it. I think you could be the only regular on this board that can eat it with no problems.
