My son- 12- was just diagnosed last week.  I keep planning meals I think he can eat according to the research I've done. But, the last 2nights he has felt awful after dinner after being fine during the day.

Last night dinner-

chicken, baked potato (with very little I can't believe it's not butter), lima beans (he actually really likes them!) and applesauce

Tonight's dinner-

Chicken and rice casserole- chicken, rice, cream of chicken and cream of mushroom soups and a can of mushrooms, peas, and peaches

Anyone know what is making him sick?  I was thinking maybe the applesauce, but then, the same thing happened tonight and no applesauce.

I hate seeing him like this!

Thanks!

When you say he felt awful, did he have cramping, nausea, diahrea. The lima beans can certainly cause gas which could cause this and cream sauces are milk based and generally not recommended for IBS. It sounds more like maybe a gas problem caused by the bean and cream sauce(milk based)

He usually gets d , but has been c the last few days. He is complaining of bad stomach pain, soI would guess it's cramping or bloated. He had the soup for lunch and didn't have a problem. But, I will steer clear of them from now on. Thanks!
Are there any beans that he can eat? They are so good for you and high in fiber that I'd really like him to eat them once in awhile. It's hard to get him to eat at least 25 grams of fiber everyday!

I agree with Canyon... beans can be rough. You may want to give him Beano before feeding him beans; they really help with minimizing gas.
I'd also stay away from any canned foods (mainly preservatives). Sometimes raw fruits (peaches) and veggies can be rough on the gut. You may want to see about cooking them thoroughly first.
Best of luck to the both of you. Please keep us posted.

i don't have problems with chick peas or black beans. i agree though, the cream based stuff isn't the best for me...
i steer clear of preservatives and gluten--but that is me. make sure he keeps up with a food diary, it really helps narrow the field...

best of luck and take care--your son is lucky to have such a caring parent!!!

Raw apples and apple juice usually bother most people with IBS, especially the juice. There's something in apple juice that can cause diarrhea in those already prone to it (helps make normal people regular, though). Applesauce is iffy; cooked apples seem to bother people a lot less, but then it also contains more juice than a raw apple. So, if you suspect the applesauce, try cutting it out. Some people can handle it, but some cannot.
