Since this is a big BBQ weekend and this is only week 2 of my son's new IBS diet, he was bummed about not having hamburgers.  The dr said no red meat.  I found turker burgers and veggie burgers at the store.  Are these ok for him?  Do they taste anything like hamburgers?

Happy Memorial everyone!

Tukey burgers are considered red meat by some docs... The veggie burgers are awesome! I love the 'pre-grilled' ones that you can find at Sams in the freezer section. A slice of tomato, bit of mayo on the bun and you can't tell the difference. Just my 2ยข

I have never had turkey burgers but a friend made spaghetti with ground turkey instead of ground beef and I could not tell the difference. I guess if he is able to handle poultry like chicken than turkey should be okay. I have had the veggie burgers (IE garden burgers) and I did not like them. But it may just be the individual palate. I know certain restaurants have turkey burgers on their menus, you may want to have him try it out before you buy a bunch of meat and it turns out he doesn't like it. Good luck :)

i enjoy turkey burgers! but i don't think they taste like hamburgers. i approach them as a new food entirely. same with turkey bacon and such...
happy barbequeing!

i am still bummed about the whole diet thing, it is rough--but it is worth not having to face the consequences...

I make chicken burgers from the white lean meat and to be honest I think they're better then beef burgers and I've been known to make some pretty awsome beef burgers....

When I make chicken burgers I add 1/2 of a small chopped onion, fine bread crumbs, sweet paprika, cumin and salt & pepper...of course making it with your favorite spices is optional, but I just love this particular combination, and with the chicken I find that the burgers are that much more juicier.

Great! I haven't had turkey burgers myself, but I did get turned on to turkey bacon years and years ago and now I won't touch regular pork bacon. Turkey bacon fries up crispier, has no fat you have to peel off and is a LOT less greasy. Make sure to try that if he likes bacon.

Turkey is all we use for hamburgers, spaghetti, chili, tacos etc. It has WAY less fat and grease to deal with! And after so many years (6) of using turkey only, on the rare occasions we do eat hamburger it's just not edible to us. I agree with the turkey bacon also! Very good. I have never heard of the turkey being a red meat. I will have to research that. That would bum me out a little lol.

Turkey isn't a red meat like beef is, turkey is a poultry like chicken and duck, ect...which all have dark meat but that's not the same as "red-meat" like with beef.

Actually, I think duck does constitute a red meat. The time I tried some I could not take more than a couple of bites: it was the fattiest piece of meat I had ever tried to chew up in my life! And it was as red as a raw steak. When I expressed my disappointment that it wasn't some sort of elegant chicken meat, my mother said that that was because it was a red meat, not white like chicken. DEFINITELY better to have a lean cut of beef than duck; a whole lot less fat.

But yes, turkey is a white meat with just dark places. So is quail and pheasant and other game birds. I'm not sure about goose, whether it is more like duck or more like chicken. I know they color turkey bacon to make it look more like regular bacon. If turkey meat looks red, it's because they have dyed it; underneath the red #40, it's as white as it is on the Thanksgiving table.

Alls I know is poultry is all supposed to be considered as white meat and beef as red meat, granted duck is mostly dark meat, but dark is different then red...duck is also more fattening and typically greasier, but yum does it taste good.

Red meat is typically harder for everyone (healthy peeps too) to digest compared to any poultry and fish.
