For all of you out there who experience anxiety along with their IBS, do you take any anti-anxiety medications (Xanax, Klonopin) that seem to help your symptoms (twitching, restlessness, irratibility...)? Thanks for the feedback.

I have GAD and OCD on top of my IBS so I take a once daily Xanax XR which seems to help my guts as well. Make sure you are open and honest with your doc if you consider taking a benzo so they can make sure if its the right med for you. It can be very addictive, although not always, but your doc would be the best person to help you make that decision.

Hi Chicago,

I take lexapro to help with my anxiety. Its an SSRI antidepressant but also helps with generalised anxiety disorder. Anxiety definatley makes my IBS worse!

I am a mental health professional with IBD/UC and anxiety disorder.  Much research shows that they occur together in 90% of cases.  The benzos help calm everything in the system down since our bodies/minds are over-reactive.  (not a judgement, its just how we work).   My IBD seems a bit better and inflammation rates are about half when I take xanax.  Unfortunately, I am still on a boatload of other stuff and trying to do other calming things.  Hope that helps.

I am also on the ulcerative colitis forum on healingwell.  Much of the info from both of these sites is helpful to the other, so you may want to take a quick view.
