Hi Keriamon,

I jsut read on your post that you had bad diarreha everyday for 2 months last summer???  I have had diarrhea every day for 4 months now and I was wondering how you got it under control. What worked for you??  I've tried about everything and nothing seems to be working.  The Colestid that the GI Dr. put me on worked for abuot 2 weeks...now I'm headed back where I was.  It hasn't improved since it started 4 months ago.  I have lost weight and I am losing my hair now.   I have had all of the tests to confirm IBS (and then some).  I've had SO many tests.  colonoscopy, EGD, stool cultures, blood tests, upper GI, small bowel series x-rays, hida scan.  Nothing explaining why I have had the diarrhea so I am Dx IBS-D.

I was just curious to your approach to relieving IBS-D.

Thanks Keriamon!

I think my D got started after I had an allergic reaction to sugar alcohols. Lesson number one. Secondly, I don't have a gall bladder and have bile problems to begin with, but I had been doing so well for a long time and wasn't on my bile medicine regularly when I ended up consuming the sugar alcohols. I was also getting worse about my diet and eating pizzas and fast food and things I was not used to.

Sooo... I ended up in bed for two days hurting too much to get out of it, except to go to the toliet. After two days the intense rumbling/gurgling and constant pain went away, but I was still left with pain before, during and after bowel movements and a lot of non-bile diarrhea. I eventually found this website and read about the calcium. I tried some, in addition to going back on my Welchol for excess bile (even though it didn't seem like I had my usual excess bile problem). The pain went away and so did the diarrhea. Now I take one Welchol a day and depending on what my stool was like the day before, I might also take a calcium pill to sort of boost the drying-up power of the Welchol. I found out that I can't live on calcium supplments alone!

I have read that calcium can help soothe G.I. tract irritations and I think that's what happened to me--a little too much bile going through on a regular basis, followed by an allergic reaction. Once the calcium got everything calmed down, I was able to go back to my old Welchol regimen and am fine as I have ever been since the old GB went bad.
