I was diagnosed with IBS about two years ago and it seems the older I get the worse it gets. I am SO TIRED of Metamucil it tastes awful and gritty. I went online today and found a so called new product called Digestive Advantage. Does anyone know if it works? I am able to have a BM about once a week without help. However, the problem is I cannot have a COMPLETE BM. This has caused me to have female problems because of this. Sounds gross I know, but no matter how clean I try to be I am not. I really need help with this. The female problems are causing me to take antibiotics to clear up infections and I dont want to get into the cycle that I am heading for.

Hi etris68,
Welcome to HealingWell! :-)
Many of us on this board are on, or have tried, Digestive Advantage (aka DA). I'd have to say about 1/2 of us like it and believes that it works.
DA is pretty much a blend of "good bacteria" that will help your digestion. It is totally safe and has no side affects (unless you're allergic to something in it). It is worth a shot. If you try it take 2 pills a day for the first few days, then go down to 1 a day. If you don't see any results in a 2-3 weeks you can bump up the dose to 2 pills a day.
I've been on it for months... I love it. It has helped me stay regular and helps cut down the bloating.
Good luck! Hopefully others will be around soon to share their experience.
Take care.

It has helped me. Not sure it is any better than just plain Acidophalous but it does work. I prefer the one you swallow to the one you chew as I think some of the chewable gets stuck in teeth.

I'm with you there, Canyon!  I prefer the one you swallow.  The only problem is that I can only find it online.  It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't wait until the last minute to buy more... Then I have to go a few days without DA.  tongue

I have just started it. My GI gave me samples, he said it would help the intestines balance out some from all the meds I have to take for my RA. I have seen a positive difference.

Good luck

Wow, Tee, this is the 1st I've heard of a doc actually recommending DA. Finally! My GI hadn't even heard of it when I told her I was trying it. She asked to see the box and then gave me the OK after she read the ingredients section.
Same goes for probiotics... None of my docs mentioned taking it. What's up with that?

I don't know why they don't mention it. Mine had heard of it but really had nothing to say about it. I do not know why they don't mention the probiotics. I have had Doctors say eat yogurt when taking antibiotics because it has good bacteria in it. They have to know about it. since I am pretty stable now I am not going to gastro Dr. but when I go in Dec. I plan to really cross examine him as to why he didn't suggest I try them. I had to learn about them on this forum.
That is not right.

If you are around a Costco, someone said they have the DA swallow type but I didn't look last time.

I noticed they sell digestive advantage at Walmart in the laxative aisle.

My G.I.'s Nurse Practitioner swore by Culturelle. It's what I'm taking right now since I'm on antibiotics (and the chewable D.A. has mannitol in it, which I can't have under any circumstances).

I am almost positive that probiotics don't interact with anything at all, but I'm sure someone will come along here who is on both Zelnorm and probiotics to assure you that nothing bad has happened to them.

Sorry I didn't mention this sooner.... I was on Zelnorm and probiotics for over 6 months. As Keri said, probiotics don't interact with anything (that I know of or that my doc mentioned). As long as you are doing well on both go for it! Zelnorm seems to lose its effect after a while, but that doesn't have anything to do with the probiotics.
Good luck! And please keep us posted.
