Hello!

I usually post on the Crohns forum b/c I am a patient.  However, my husband has IBS.  His alternates betweens bouts of urgency and diarrhea and periods of constipation.  As of right now he has not been able to have a BM in 3 days but keeps feeling like he needs to go.  At least we both understand each others problems.  Anyways, he noticed that the Zelnorm commercials now have men in them.  I was wondering why it was limited to females at first and if it is now approved for male use.  If so, what do people think of the medication.  Should he ask his doc about it?

Hi Fitzy,
Welcome to IBS! :-)
I was on Zelnorm for many months and it did wonders for me. I'm female though, so I don't have a clue how it would affect your husband. BUT, since now it's approved for men I would definitely ask him to talk to his doc about it. Sorry to say, I don't think there are any male IBSers on this board that have tried Zelnorm. I hope I'm wrong though and someone speaks up.
Good luck to you both!

At first it was just approved for women and I noticed also that they now show men and don't make the disclaimer. Why not look at their website and see what it says about men. it is being given to men. It was supposed to be for women under 65 but it was given to me at 70. One cramped me up so bad I thought I would die and went like I had taken a box of laxatives. The next day I took a half and was so dizzy I could not get out of bed for hours without falling into the wall and the room spinning.

I don't know if your husband would be able to take it since he also has D. From what others have said about it, it seems to be a very powerful laxative. I would think it would make his bouts of D even worse. Has he tried the other, usual standbys when he's constipated, like prune juice and aloe vera capsules?
