I posted a while back, believing I had IBS...

I have been fine for WEEKS! And all of a sudden, BOOM! Here we go again!

Is it normal to be "normal" for a while and have an attack out of no where? I was wondering if its due to taking Glucophage for my blood sugar...

Im confused AND worried!

I believe it is normal for it to subside. I don't know about the Glucophage though. I don't think you should be worried because usually when things are serious they are more constant. you may have just eaten something that messed you up for a while. I have had it happen to me and then everything is find again. I am really not sure this is normal for IBS but there doesnt' seem to be anything else to call it. You probably should check the side effects for Glucophage. It would seem that it might mess up your stomach as many things can. If you just started taking it maybe that is it.

Some medicines can cause diarrhea as a side affect. Check to see if that's listed for your medicine (you should be able to find it on the drug company's website or call your pharmacist). I find that if something might cause bowel problems in a regular person, it's almost sure to do so in a person who has sensitive guts to begin with. If it is a listed side affect, you need to decide if you are going to give your body time to adjust--and how long--or if you're going to go back to your doctor to see if he can prescribe you something else. Unfortunately diarrhea is a fairly frequent side affect, but fortunately it is also something you usually get over after a week or two.

You haven't been into any of the diabetic candies have you? Sugar-free or reduced sugar candies, gums, mints, ice cream, etc. almost always have sugar alcohols in them and they are a big no-no. They cause diarrhea in perfectly normal people; they can really tear an IBSer up. On the contents list, they should be listed under sugar as "sugar alcohol". In the ingredients list they are compounds that end in -itol, such as sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, etc.

And yes, it's normal to be normal for a while, then to get into something that messes you all up again. Stress can do it, as can a certain food (or a cumulative effect from a number of foods), medicine and even another illness (I'm still not back to normal after getting a cold last month).

I really HATE THIS CRAP!

I was fine earlier today and then BOOM. To the bathroom 3 times within 45 minutes! 10 minute visits each!

Im worried. It wasnt this bad in the past. Is it supposed to or does it get worse with age?

Levbid... doesnt seem to work.

Im going out of my mind here. I just returned to my desk and I fell like someone sapped all of the energy right out of my body. I am drinking water so that I wont get dehydrated.

What do I do?

Hi jay,
Do you have tea? When I get like that I usually sip on Camomile (or any "calming" tea). I also like to keep a heating pad around for cramps. Never hurts to pop a Pepto pill (or 2) and also some probiotics.
Don't stress over it too much because it will only make things worse. Are you keeping a food diary to help pinpoint what foods exactly are giving you trouble?
Hope you feel better soon...

As far as I know, IBS doesn't change for the better or for the worse as you age, although your symptoms can change periodically, sometimes to something completely different--e.g. some people who have had diarrhea for decades will suddenly develop constipation.

My doc claims IBS gets better with age... that we grow out of it. Based on this site, she's full of bull.

my ex- M-I-L had IBS 20 yrs ago and i dont know what it was owed to maybe nerves....she was always a nervous person.

in nov 2004 she was DX w/ Colon C. they did chemo thinking it was alright and didnt cut it out when they should have b/c then it spread to her lymnodes and then on to her liver and now she is dead as  of may 24 this year.

thing that scares me is that no one in her family had any cancer. so she was the first one, now is there a conection between ibs and cc later on, it took 20 years for the cc to come about-or maybe sooner that is when they caught it nov 04, but she may have had it as early as 3 yrs bfore that date but didnt know it.

they say it has a high cure rate if caught early. but she didnt go for  the yearly or bi yearly colonscopy and thre are no symptoms sometimes with this illness, but for occult blood and full feeling in rectum all the time or C & D.

so i have ibs too. my mom had illiac sprue but i was tested for it and do not carry the gene marker for it, but i do not know if you can get  it regardless of that b/c maybe you can get it from a trama or insult to your body to bring it out.

i have re-occuring bouts with D and c-dif infections from taking AX, for the last year. i take the flagyl for it and it knocks it out for a while but comes back like a bad penny. i tried taking probiotics but for one reason or another they consitpate me even though i take lots of fiber, like fiber one and all bran every day. so who knows

ARRRGGGGHHH!

I think I brought this latest episode on by being STUPID.

Steak and Cheese from the cafeteria here at my job. Not only did I make a careless choice of food, I ate from the cafeteria that myself and MANY of my co-workers have affectionately named "Da Fear Factor Cafe". Dont ask why...  skull

I should have known better, but I had a craving for a steak and cheese. Yeah, I know nono .

I will try to be more careful. What do you all do when you have a "craving"?
