I have IBS and my subgroup is the one where one suffers with functional diarrhea and faecal urgency normally first thing in the morning. On occasions I also suffer from postprandial urgency.

My doctor has prescribed nortriptyline and fluphe****ne which work well but make one drowsy.

Has anyone any advice on other means of controlling faecal urgency?  I read that proton pump inhibitors and even calcium can work to control IBS-D.  Any suggestions would ne most welcome.  Thanks

Hi Justin,
Welcome to HealingWell!  :-)
Yes, you are correct about calcium working to help control IBS-D.  I haven't, however, heard of proton pump inhibitors to help with D.  I've only heard of them helping with acid reflux or GERD.  There are cholesterol meds out there (Welchol) that help control bile D.  Those are mainly for people who have had their gallbladders removed.
Here is a great post about Calcium to help with D.  Most people take Caltrate with Vitamin D.  Before you start taking it you'll have to make sure you're not on any meds that will interact with it.  Best to talk with your doc or pharmacist if you have any concerns.

Hi!  I'm a 26 year old female...

I came down with the wonderful IBS-D this past March and have been dealing with it everyday since.  It HAS got better so there is hope.  Like you, I have the, what I like to call the "morning rush".  Right when you wake up after a good nights sleep, you have to dash to the bathroom.

I have been to 2 GI specialist, 2 family practice Dr.'s, etc.  Had a colonoscopy, EGD, hydascan, ultrasoiunds, ct scans, etc.  I tried calcium (it didn't work for me, but it does for some).  Tried cholesterol meds...didn't work.

I started a powder form of "good bacteria" that I mix with water.  It works WONDERS.  Maybe something like that would help you?

Are you a nervous/stressed out type personality??  This IBS-D was a real eye opener for myself.  I believe my IBS-D started because of stress and nervousness.  RElaxation is key to getting better!  Oh, and don't try to Dx yourself by what you read on the internet.  That will make it worse.  I thought I had cancer and everything else under the sun!

Start a hobby, take a waly, watch a good movie!

Take care!

Shelly

I also would like to know more from Shelley about the good bacteria formula she has discovered.  Looking forward to hearing more from Shelley.  Thanks in advance.

Hello,
This is my first time doing this and I hope you can bare with me. I have had IBS- d for many years, but as I have been reading some of these posting, I notice there are some people with IBS-d and Diverticulitis. I was wondering how old some of you are out there with these two conditions. I too think I might have diverticulitis, but i always believed that it was something that people in there 60's and 70's get. If anyone can help me out with this, I would be greatful.

Hi Brunigirl3,
Welcome to HealingWell! :-)
You might get more replies if you start a new thread. This post seems to be a bit hidden - and I know there are a couple IBSers with diverticulitus as well. Good luck!
