Hello!

Have any of you used Bentyl for your IBS. I have pancolitis and IBS, my Dr. recently prescribed Bentyl for my IBS symptoms which are increased in gas, inconsistency in stools (D and C), and cramps/gurgling. I have tried pepermint tea, and it does wonders for me. However, I seem to not have time to drink it when I need it the most. :-)

If you have tried an antispasmatic, what drug was it, did it work, and did you have any side effects? Thanks for your help! HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

I've taken Bentyl (dicyclomine) and hyoscyamine; both are anti-spasmodics, but I found Bentyl worked better.  Hyoscyamine made me dry up like a raisin.  Bentyl might have a similar effect on some people (you might notice a little dry mouth, for instance) but it did help with occasional mild cramping.

Hyoscamine did not do a thing for me; might as well have drunk water. But, from what I've read on here from others, antispasmodics are very hit or miss. If Bentyl doesn't do anything for you, be sure to try something else. There's plenty out there to try and everyone seems to have one or two that works for them and the rest don't.

I've taken both Bentyl and hyoscyamine and both had side effects.

I could not stay on Bentyl as I felt STONED, and I stayed on the hyoscyamine for several months, but you may have to play with doses to regulate. I was experiencing blurred vision, cotton mouth and could hardly stay awake, to where driving was not safe. I ended up taking the meds at night, and broke the pills in half.

I am currently on Elavil, which is working well for me. I may be wrong, I think it is actually an antidepressant ( like the 2 others). It is very mild. Hope that helps

I was first given hyoscyamine and although I didn't link it at the time it caused me not to sweat profusely all summer, not even in the ultra hot tanning bed. For me that side effect was a welcome relief to my usual summer state. I don't think it did anything for my ibs. I was given bentyl in the emergency room and it gave me an asthma attack so I tried it one more dose and had the same response. I threw it out. Now I take zelnorm 2x a day and when the pain and more importantly gas pain gets really bad I take .25mg of atavan. I don't know why it works, could be in my head, I don't know but that and fennel tea are the best two things I've found so far.

They use Elavil for pain these days also. I found a heating pad works well. I have not tried the Bentyl. My Dr. said the Donnatel was better but I have not had to use it. I am sure it will make me tired. Hyoscomine does't do much for me but I think it helps a little. I don't have extreme pain usually. Mine all just started up again after a few months of respite. Have been stressing out lately about other medical problems so maybe that brought it on. Now they are gone and I have this. Can't win.
