Hello everyone,
I feel for all of you.  I would like to introduce myself, I am a single Mom to a 12 year old boy.  Beginning in Nov. /06 my son began having some abdominal pain without D or anything else of significance other than high fever.  He had this for 8 days and then received antibiotics for pneumonia of all things.  He had no symptoms of that, no wheezing or coughing. The abdominal pain was dismissed as gas or flu.
He kept having the pains and they have gotten progressively worse.  He started having 15-30 attacks of pain, and they would come in 5-15 minute intervals. This went on through all of December with about 6 trips to the ER.  He was sent home each time with diagnoses such as gas, flu, cramping due to something he ate, constipation.  None of these are the answer.  I have begged and pleaded with our (now former) doctor to send him to a specialist, he thought it was kidney stones.  It wasn't.
From ER visits in January he has been on buscopan, and now Dicetel, which have slowed the attacks but not stopped them. I have now switched to another doctor and they have discovered through ultrasound that he has an enlarged gall bladder and a cyst on one kidney.
Does anyone know if this can cause such horrible pains?  His pain attacks have increased to 30-45 mins and it is excruciating. He has them every single day up to 7 times. By the time we can get in to the doctor his attacks subside and the doc doesn't get to see the cringing and screaming.  We are going to see a gastro doc , have an appt this week to find out when we see him.  We can't take it anymore, my son is exhausted and he gets so dizzy and pale after each attack.  If anyone has these kinds of symptoms please help.  confused
 Thank you so much.

Having had a malfuntioning gall bladder, I can definitely attest to the fact that a gall bladder attack will give you horrible, horrible pain. I used to pace the floor for 30-45 minutes before I would end up having a big episode of diarrhea and the pain would start to ease up. I hurt so bad that I couldn't stand up straight. Someone else on here mentioned her gall bladder attacks as being about the same pain level and intensity as labor pains, if that gives you an idea! Try giving him a heating pad or hot water bottle as that helps the cramping some. I never found any medicine that helped my pain or cramping, but then I had a hard time finding doctors who'd actually give me medicine.

If I were you and the GI suggests removal of the gall bladder, I'd take it. I don't know what they can do about the cyst on the kidney, and it too may be contributing to the pain, but since having my GB out, I've not had pain like that anymore. I have some bowel problems--diarrhea mainly--but I can largely control that with medicine. If your son did have his gall bladder removed, he may have similar bowel problems for the rest of his life, but hopefully the pain would be gone. And hopefully, being young, his body would do a better job of adapting to the lack of a gall bladder and he'd be more normal than older people who have it removed. Children's bodies are very resilient that way.

Hi cmom94,
Any update? How is your son?
Hope the new doc was able to help him. No one should be going through all he has at such a young age.
