I posted this in the crohns section, where i usually post. But i thought i would try here too, thanks guys.

So I had a doctors appointment today and everything checked out!! That is the good news the bad news is apparently my flare ended in a bad case of first time ever IBS. While it is not my crohns it is sure not joking around- it means business. To be honest it feels the same as active diesase. My doctor wants to try anti-depressants? Has anyone done this or heard of this. What will the anti- depressants make me feel like if i am not depressed. Thanks guys.

Yes, my friend is on Paxil and it has helped her tremendously. She did not suffere from depression though she did say she is more easy going now. There is more Seratonin in the stomach than in the brain. I think that is the reason for trying the antidepressants. She has only had one !BS attack since put on it and she said it was minor.

It's true... Docs have been known to prescribe anti-d meds to help control IBS. Like Canyon says, the gut contains a large portion of our serotonin levels which anti-d medication has been found to help stabilize. As long as you're not having any ill side effects it could be worth a shot. I haven't been on any so I'm sorry but I can't say from personal experience how you it will make you feel. Hopefully someone will be along who has been on anti-depressants.

I take lexapro and do great with it. It didn't help DH, but zoloft did. They are not, however, prescribed for this particular use for us, so can't help you with that end of it. Everyone seems to react uniquely to anti-depressants, so don't be surprised if you have to experiment a while to find the right one for you. Hope it helps!

I am not sure that all antidepressants target Seratonin and that may be the key

I take effexor and it has helped my bowel problems.  Stress, anxiety, depression makes IBS worse.  I still have bad days but they don't seem as bad as they used to.

Hi All, I haven't been on in awhile. I have been going out almost every day and feeling great ! I have IBD , Crohns . 2 years ago a bout with colitis. it's been 2 years now that I'm on Asacol 9 a day, I was on canasa when flaring and antibiotics. It's been 3 months now and I'm doing GREAT ! My doctor put me on Paxil and I am 100 % better . I noticed also a big change when I started drinking lots of decaf tea. I now can make plans to go out and not have to worry every waking day. I do hope it works for others the way paxil has helped me.
