Hello. I am new here so plz bear with me. Im a 43 year old female. I started out with having problems with severe constipation. this has went on a while. I went to the dr because I also was havin prob with center upper abd. pain severe. with swelling, distention. He wrote me a script for Protonix. It hasnt helped much but with a little acid reducer....my main problem now is pain/discomfort on my upper right abd. area that seems to radiate pain around the right side of my back like about where my kidney is I guess. the pain has also moved some to my left side as well. same feeling. It is almost the feeling of a pulled ,muscle. but im sure that isnt it. The discomfort is like NW of my belly button. :-)) But my lower back feels like ive been kicked. Actually both areas just feel like a brusied feeling. But I am sure this has something to do with my bowels. I have to take MiraLax in order to be able to go. My stools are of course soft. Not diahreaha. No vomiting, not hardly any nausea, no fever, some times my stools are darker,,,but not close to black. The last 2 days they are light brown. If I dont take the mrialax, they are very hard...pellet like. The pain also kinda goes around my belly button to the right. Ive been refered to a gastro dr. Waiting to get in. In the mean time, Im scared to death. My mom died last year of crohns disease. My  Greaat grandmother has colon cancer at 78 and lived to be 93.  I feel like my ribs are sore..brusied feeling. Any help please..... If I get distented, the ability to pass gas or have a bowel movement does wonders.

Glad you are going to gastro Dr. hope it won't be too long. In the meantime try keeping the gas to a minimum with Gas-x or some other antigas med. It sounds like you might be having spasms which can trap gas. Make sure you are getting enough fiber but go slow with it and make sure you are drinking plenty of water. You have history in your family so make very sure that that is brought out. It is rare to die of Crohns disease though it can be very debilitating. I am sure that the Dr. will want to have a colonscopy done and I would not settle for anything less and they might want to do an upper endoscopy but it sounds like the problem in lower intesting. Protonix doesn't do much for anything but acid. These drugs are handed out like they are a miracle cure for everything but the common cold. They seldom really take care of a problem and usually only cover up symptoms. Stay away from gassy foods for now, dairy for one and see if it helps. Good luck with you appt.

Hi Angeliz,
Welcome to HealingWell! :-)
I just wanted to add to what Canyon mentioned... Your doc might also want to do the upper scope (EGD) to test for ulcer or H.pylori. Especially with your family history of GI trouble, you should definitely get scoped. Even at your age, you might want to get scoped (colonoscopy) every year or 2.
Do you have any idea when you'll be able to get in with the GI doc?
