Dear friends at HW,
  Well-it's back !   My IBS.   Yes, I'm feeling depressed & anxious--last bad bout was in 2002--when i had a colonoscopy---everything "normal"---Gastro Dr--prescribed Librax (generic--i don;t think brand is around any more)---Librax,....3   X a day.
  My symptoms..ONLY upon awakening--like--6 AM--go to bathroom---just a "semi normal" loose stool---then 10 mins later ...another...maybe a bit looser--then in 10 mins...more---thre or 4 times...ONLY in the morning!
  If i take the 3 Librax/day---it slows it down--some days---i only go once...& it's a hard bowel.     But, the 3 Librax makes me very sleepy--since i already take Valium at nite--before bedtime...& Librax...has Librium.
OK---my question--when it's real bad (or if i only want to take 1 or 2 Librax a day---one Immodium tablet after my Bowel movements...does the trick.)
Anyone here---also take Librax?  Does it help?  Is Bentyl better?
BTW--i'm also getting--from time to time--that "esophogeal spasm"--feels like a golf ball going up & down in my throat!    My gastro says this is the same mecanism causing my IBS---rapid contractions of esophogus.......just like the rapid contractions of the intestine causes.....the frequent BMs---Dr. gave me "Nulev" under the tongue--twice/day----I forgot to ask Dr--is it OK to take both...Librax AND Nulev?   Both are anti-spasmodics--
Anyway--i do hope I hear from people who have similar problem...(Early morning multiple BMs)---who also take Librax....AND who get that.....esophogeal spasm--PLEASE-- I need to hear from others on this--Thanks & blessings--your responses are so "reassuring"...& I really do appreciate it---Regards--Robert

Have you tried calcium supplements for the loose bowels? They can't help your bowel spasms, but they can help firm up your stools so maybe you don't have to take immodium or so much of the other stuff.

Hi Robert...first of all, I feel for you!  I know what you're going though.  Just like you, my diarrhea "hits me" upon awakening in the morning.  I'd say about 10 minutes after I wake up, I'm off to the bathroom...sometimes it's diarrhea, sometime loose stools, needless to say, it's not normal.  I've been like this since March '06.  It was a sudden onset.  I have no fevers or no blood in stools.  I do, however have excess mucus in stools.  The GI specialist can't find anything wrong with me (even though I feel that there is which is VERY frustrating)...I had a colonoscopy, EGD, hidascan, blood tests, stool cultures, ultrasounds, ct scan...all normal. (They did say I had some GERD when I had the EGD done.)
My GI specialist tried a number of Rx, including Librax, Bentyl, & Elavil and it didn't work for me.  (The Rx drugs made me feel worse...but I know everybody is different.) I don't know what the answer is.  I'm due to have a baby in a couple of weeks and I plan to continue IBS-D treatment with homeopathic methods.  Rx drugs make me feel worse.  Right before I found out I was pregnant, I went to a homeopathic doctor.  He put me on a probiotic powder that you mix with distilled water along with an "under the tounge" pill that dissolves.  (all is 100% natural).  It was starting to help some, but I discontinued use when I found out I was pregnant.  I just chose not to take anything while pregnant, and boy has this IBS-D been a joyride to deal with.
If you ever have a question, don't hesitate to ask!

I had the spasms so bad that they sent me for a nuclear heart test. They thought I had a heart attack. Those spasms are fierce. I don't have any other similar problems so all I can do is wish you good luck. Have you tried the high fiber cereals. These are not a cure-all but help a bit. It is called Kashi Go Lean and is available in all the grocery stores and not expensive.

This is my first time on this site but I just wanted to thank you. I have IBS but only have bouts once in a while. Just a week ago it came back. The esophageal spasm you describe I am having but the golf ball makes me feel like I'm going to throw up. I wake up in the AM with cramps and very loose stools. It seems to continue for a few hours. I'm always better in the evening. I have no idea why. I don't take any meds at this point but I work full-time (in the field) and I'm having such a hard time. I get very emotional. It just wears me out. Anyway, I feel like I'm the only one going through it. Thanks for letting me know I'm not. --Lovestotalk :-)

Welcome Lovestotalk,

I'm glad that you have joined and you are able to see that you are not alone. Have you seen your doc about your esphogal problems? He/she may be able to do a scope to see what may be causing the issues and would be able to treat you. I hope you can get some relief soon.

Take Care

Thank you Des for your reply. I went to the doctor but he didn't suggest a scope, just said the everything is caused by by IBS. It's better today, now I just have the diarrhea in the mornings. I'm in the process of selling my home, I've been in it for 17 years and have to be out by the end of July, moving into an apartment. I think the stress of it all is getting to me. I just wish my first few hours of the day weren't so difficult since I work. sad
