Over the last few days I became constipated. This is not a new experience for me, I've inherited a digestive system that has always required careful maintanence, and I've always needed fiber supplemements, lots of healthy food, and regular exercise to maintain anything like regular bowel habits.

But yesterday, all morning, I was expereincing the urge to defecate, and then all that would come out is water and gas, leaving me still feeling "full". Finally I did have some narrow stool come out, but just a little bit at a time over the course of the day.

I took a stimulant laxative last night, (which I usually avoid) and this morning it has still not worked.

These symptoms are kind of freaking me out though. Can anyone advise?

I know when it comes to stimulant laxatives, you can develop a dependency on them over time and they will eventually cease to work very well to boot. I don't know if people can develop that problem with just fiber, though.

It's not unusual for someone with IBS to have a change in symptoms--for better, for worse, or for about the same as before.

Look your diet over carefully to make sure you haven't added the least newest food, drink, medicine or supplement. Small things can make big changes. Make sure none of your old supplements got a "new and improved" makeover. If you also need exercise to keep regular, make sure you are still meeting your minimum requirements. If you briskly walked on the treadmill before and have replaced it with the same distance, but as a leisurely evening stroll, that might be the difference.

You might also look to see if you have any constipating foods in your diet. Bananas, for one, are constipating (and are even worse in their dehydrated form).

Hey I have the same symptoms as you and the doctor put me on amitiza and some muscle relaxers for down there I have just started this treatment so I hasn't started to work yet. Just wanted to tell you in case it helped. If you try anything that helps at all please do tell me. I have had this problem for about a year now and I tried drinking a lot of water, eating lots of fiber, taking stimulant laxatives, prescribed laxatives, I even had a colonoscopy, but nothing has worked. I'm hoping this will work, but it you find something that works better please tell me.
