I've had IBS for around 15 years, and I have been reading this forum to find help with another related but different problem reflux.
I haven't found anything for the reflux yet, but I have found something that helped me with my IBS symptoms. I had bloating, cramping pains, alternating D and C, night sweats and the worst part for me which was nausea and constant Gas.
I had scopes about
3 years ago, and no physical disease was found. MY doctor sent me to a dietitian who recommended i follow an elimination diet. The first things i cut out were caffeine and sugar substitutes as she found these to be big stomach irritants. Then I tried more fiber but as this wasn't working I finally decided to try the full elimination diet.
Its hard, as your food is very restricted for a few weeks, but I felt so fantastic after a couple of weeks i knew it was worth it. I've been eating this way with occasional lapses for around 2 years, and i haven't had the symptoms unless I lapse.
I found there are a few food groups I need to avoid to keep the symptoms at bay, and I also avoid all additives, MSG, colorings, and preservatives.
This is often nicknamed "failsafe eating", when you are following a full elimination diet. I think it was developed at the royal prince Alfred hospital in Sydney, Australia.
You can get more information at the following sites. If you want to give it a try, I recommend you work with a dietitian if possible to ensure you are getting enough nutrients. And make sure you see a Dr first to make sure there is nothing else wrong.
If anyone has any information on reflux, please pass it on. I have recently had an attack of this and not sure what to do apart from a restricted diet and the Nexium prescribed by my Dr.
