My husband has suffered uric acid stones for the last 12 years with increasing frequency. He has had all the ghastly treatments mentioned, stents, lithotripsy, lazer etc. and in particular the lithotripsy broke up the stone but created more problems as the fragments became catylysts for even more stones. He never suffered great pain and earliest warning came from blood in the urine after taking any form of excersise. Last lazer treatment was in June last year which resulted more than 20 fragments passing in the following few weeks.
Specialist recommended the K-Citra-10 which is in tablet form and is not sold in UK. Policy on supply is to varies as some sources insist on a perscription whereas others will supply freely.
8 months on and taking minimum dose of 2 per day no sign of any recurrance
fingers crossed!
Has anybody else used this treatment and if so what result have they had?

hello!
I'm thinking that you're referring to an extended release potassium citrate? In the states that is marketed at Urocit-K also, for anyone else who may want to chime in...
I have been using it since June 2010, after my last basket retrieval/stent etc..etc.. fiasco. Now I don't at all like taking medication but I haven't had any recurrances myself. I haven't had any images though so I also can't be sure that there are any new stones lurking. No symptoms though.
Good luck to your hubby.

Many thanks. He would be interested to hear of any future developments as you both started at the same time.
Good luck to you

Hi -- I, too, have a high level of uric acid in my body and my right kidney is loaded with uric acid stones. I was on the drink version of poly citrate K (a powder that I added to a glass of water both in the am and pm). The drink proved effective in that I passed a good deal of debris and stones but, unfortunately, I developed terrible GERD. Instead, I'm now on allopurinol and starting up sodium bicarbonate tablets again (I also have big issues with dehydration). Was really hoping the poly citrate K would work for me. Good luck and keep us updated!

Hello Sammies,
My husband has been free from stones for 8 months and will be having a full scan in July.
All the best

hello...just an update from me for both of you. I haven't had any stones OR symptoms since my last post either. So this is good, I'll take it!
I've been putting off the f/u with my urologist because I really dont trust him (my primary care doctor has encouraged me to find a new one, but i guess I've been waiting and hoping I'll be ok for a while!). I also feel like the KUB's are a waste of money and healthcare resources because every time I've had a tech or MD look at one (even when I had a huge stone in my left kidney) they always just glance at it, rub their chins, and say.."well this may be a stone, but it could be a lot of things..". And then I get another bill from BCBS for $45. So unless they are prepping me for surgery I just decline xrays!
Sending good wishes to you!
