Hi Bird Lady,

I have had three UTI infections and A kidney stone removed since December 2010. I also have cirhossis of the liver due to giant cell hepatitis which was not diagnosed until 1990. I am currently waiting for a transplant. For me, oral antibiotics did not work. I had enterococcus twice and I can't remember the other bacteria. They put a picc line in my arm so I could infuse myself with intravenous antibiotics. I took gentomycin in January and in April, I took vancomycin. I was on the genomycin for one week and the vancomycin for two weeks. A home nurse came out to the house and showed me how to infuse myself, and her cost was covered by Medicare. I get Medicare even though I am only 49 because my end stage liver disease disabled me. I have not had a mediport yet, but they say if my uti's continue, they may want to put one in. They do it all the time for oncology patients.

Sorry I did not see your post sooner. I am more active in the hepatitis forum and with my two recent hospitalizations, have not had a chance to check the kidney disease forum. I hope all is going well for you. I don't have birds, but I do have a 14 year old miniature dachshund to keep me company while my husband is at work.
