My mother is almost 60-years-old, and is an alcoholic. She was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver 10 years ago. Over the past couple of years, she started showing signs of the disease - bruising, legs swelling, bad circulation, jaundice, etc...

A couple months ago she was admitted to the ER  for low sodium levels, which then turned into low magnesium and potassium levels too. She was released, but since then can't seem to keep any levels stable. She's 5'2 and is down to 98 pounds...maybe lower now. She's jaundice, gray, no muscle, disoriented (not sure if that's alcohol though), and has low sodium again. Her doctor has told her to go to the ER for evaluation but is refusing.

Please don't write back with advice on taking/helping her...it's a complicated situation. I'm just looking to see if anyone is familiar with this stage of the disease and your thoughts on what I should prepare myself for...

I wish I could help you. I know someone that was admitted for almost the same as you describe. They even had her death certificate signed because they were sure she would not make it thru the night. That was a good 15 years ago and she is still around and still drinks. I just don't understand how she has come so close to death several times and still feels a need to grab that bottle. I have lost touch with her but know thru friends that she is on disability, social security, medicare or something on those lines, and lives with her daughter. I do miss her friendship but we travel different paths now.

Sorry you haven't had the response you wanted. maybe its because no one has any good advice or experience to help you.
