Please excuse all spelling errors as I am typing fast because I need to get to the hospital
I am in need of some advice !!
A really good friend of mine has had kidney failure for years, she's been going to dialasys gfor years, 3 times a week. She does not want a kidney transplant and has signed a DNR and also filled out her health care proxy form with her wishes regarding treatment.
She is now in the hospital because she is VERY lathargic and now has liver failure. She is yellow and very weak. She is only awake for a few seconds then is right back to sleeping. She is on no medications or IV's that would make her like this. All we have been told is, she;s this sleepy because her liver is failing.
Here's my question...
What can they do for her ? Is there any hope she will recover ? Do I need to start my good-byes ?
I need a realistic answer about this please !! The Dr and nurses will say there is always a chance we will just have to see ~ well I wanna be prepared, has anyone been through this ? what are the real chances of her coming out of this ? Any info would be helpful !!
Thank you in advance !!

Hey, to be honest, I don't know much about liver disease but thought you might find more answers in the hepatitis forum. They have a lot experience with the liver and can help more on that. As for as dialysis. I know how taxing hemo dialysis is. Ater a few years of it, a lot of people no longer want to continue doing it because of how drained it makes you feel.

How old is your friend? Before the liver failure was she able to take care of herself? There is another option out there that not very many dialysis patients know about. Its called Peritoneal dailysis. You do the dialysis at home yourself every night but it does not involve the blood. I have been doing it for 5 months now and love it. If you are more interested, please let me know and I will be happy to post more about it. Or you can also find out more information from the davita website.

Amy , my husband had a liver transplant ..but while waiting his kidneys went out .....I've tried to talk him into pertinoneal but he wants nothing to do with it ...he does dialysis three times a week at a divita outpatient center , we are young and have children ...I know after transplant it wasn't a option because of scar ect , but I'm sure at this point it should be a option if I could talk him into it ..I've even offer to take the class to certify so I could do it from home at night time ....he won't go for that either ....men can be so stubborn...Danelle
