Hi, 37 year old male that hated life last week because of two kidney stones. I just got hired on by Union Pacific Railroad and during my new hire training and exams I had been noticing my urinary tract had been feeling like it was infected. Anyhow last Sunday when I had woke up to get my morning coffee I had turned on ESPN and out of nowhere my left kidney started going haywire. I had never experienced pain like that before in any of my kidneys. I usually have a high tolerance for pain but I decided to go to the ER and get whatever it was causing the pain checked out before I would have to do it during the work week. Couldnt have happened at a worse time either bc my neice was being dedicated and I had really needed to study for the final exams as a Conductor.

So, I get to the ER and by this time I am sweating like crazy! I can't collect my thoughts anymore when they are asking me questions and the pain has now moved to my stomach. They see me and I am laying down in even more pain. They insist on a CT scan and turns out I have two kidney stones. One is 3 mm and they couldn't telll me the size of the other still in my kidney. Long story short they gave my Toridal for the pain?? The pain shifted down to my testicles and it felt like I was kicked there only the pain wouldnt go away.

The doctor I had was so unhelpful. He was clueless and had no suggestions on why I got them or how I could pass them. He actually said it could take years for the 2nd one to pass. Nor would he refer me to a specialist or prescribe me anything to help it actually pass....only painkillers.

That night when I had went to the bathroom my penis felt like it was burning really bad. I was never instructed to carry a strainer and I never recall seeing anything urinate out. I had felt better for only a day after that then BAMN, the same exact symptoms happen all over again. Pain goes haywire in kidney, moves to front of stomach, down to testicles then fire through the shaft of penis. I again didnt notice anything when I had urinated but I was also at work and very busy by this time with exams.

My questions is this. Could I have completely passed them both and not realized it or was that pain in my testicles when it was actually passing??? For the rest of this week I actually feel really good now and have a solid flow of urine again. No pain at all, anywhere. Or could they both be lodged somewhere still??? I also drank alot of water with freshly squeezed lemons and had cranberry juice as well.

Any advice would be great bc I really don't have time to go back to the doctors again with this new job, especially for one that isn't informative.

Welcome to HW and sorry I didn't see your post sooner! Its likely you passed whatever stones were outside the kidney they were picking up on the scan and its possible there were more then one and behind closely to each other and they only picked one up or that it broke apart during its exit. As a general rule dormant stones cause little pain while still in the kidney unless they're super huge. When they become painful and can be dangerous is when they are moving.

With that kept in mind its likely you passed the visible ones and yes the ones in the kidney could sit for years. The urethra and ureters become irritated from the sharp edges of the passing stone and you can even get small tears and bleeding thus the burning irritated feel you were experiencing.

If your passing urine OK and your not in pain nor having symptoms of infection then I would just make a regular appointment with a urologist and have a follow up. The purpose of straining is one to check to see if they pass and two to check pathology to identify the type of stones your producing. Make sure you continue to drink plenty, stay hydrated and good luck with the new job!

Thanks so much Vickie! I think they passed but I just didnt notice anything actually come out. Like you said, It's possible the one 3mm stone broke into two pieces...which may of helped it exit sooner. I was drinking tons of lemon water.

Thanks again!
