Bob, I am very happy you are doing well! Great news. That also gives me some encouragement.
Well, I had my second opinion today from another surgeon and he is confident with Robotics that he can do a partial Nephrectomy. He has specialized in partials. I was very impressed with this guy and the overall staff. I must have been there for 2.5 to 3 hours. I met with the nurse practitioner for some good time before meeting with him. He's also going to call my general doctor (whom I really trust and is very good) to fill him in on everything. He is also the first doctor to actual show me the CT scan images on the computer going through them and explaining what is going on and why the partial can be done. He said there is always the risk that once he gets in there, it will required full removal, but he has done partials like mine that were even deeper. I guess my kidney has one extra artery which is rare, but not considered abnormal. Essentially, the arteries need to be clamped down and the cutting has to be done within about
30 minutes. The biggest risk complication is bleeding but still pretty small risk (4-5%) I believe. It will require catheter, of course, and some sort of kidney drain before going home (1-2 days). But there is enough room between the tumor and area where the urine flows out of. He said the partial would retain about
85-90% of that kidney's current function as he needs to cut away about
1 CM of tissue away from the mass. I was very happy to hear that. The mass itself, of course, serves no kidney function.
Their research indicates about
90% of these at this size are cancerous. They rarely biopsy in my case unless it's a situation with the patient whose health would be not in a condition for surgery. They also said if it was 1 to 1.5 CM they would just monitor it (like Steve's). Smaller ones like that can be handled with ablation too if needed. He said if the mass was an oncocytoma (sp) it could stay benign, but could also grow to where it would cause problems even if it stayed benign.
Surgery is scheduled for June 14th (gulp).
