I ask because my 15-year-old cat has had CKD for close to 4 years and is in the end stage. I give him daily subcutaneous fluids and potassium. Is it an unpleasant or painful disease, or only at the end?

Thank you for answering my question.

Catlady, I am sorry to read about your cat. My sister had an older too. Her vet had been treating her but when it progresses like this the vet recommended euthanasia because it is painful for a cat at this point. He kindly reminded my sister Sophie has given you 15 good years of pleasure & you have done the same. Now comes the time we cannot be selfish by prolonging the inevitable. There was nothing that could be done. Her vet suggested she take her cat home for a couple of days to spend a little more time with her & then bring her back to the vet. My sister had 5 cats at one time, this was number 4. This vet has taken care of all of her kitties. I suggest you take your cat to your vet & discuss the options. It is a very hard thing to do, but we owe it to our animals not to ever let them suffer. I am an animal lover & have gone down this hard path before.

Thanks for the response, Stray. I hate that your sister had to go through the same thing, it's so painful. I agree completely that an animal shouldn't suffer, and my cat has not shown any outward signs of pain or ill feelings. He eats, plays, uses the litter box, cuddles, etc, as he normally would. He is doing amazingly well for a cat his age and in his condition, but I know his days are numbered. The vet is actually very impressed that he has gained weight and has not recommended euthanasia at this point. According to his labs, he is in what is considered final stage kidney disease though and I am prepared to make that call when it's time. Since my cat can't talk, I just wanted to know if kidney disease (not talking the complete shut down of kidneys) brings more subtle, day-to-day feelings of discomfort like headaches, pain, lethargy, that my cat might not be displaying.
