I was diagnosed with IgA nephropathy a few years ago and it has been very stable. I only take 100mg of Losartan to keep it under control. I've noticed that since I've started taking Losartan, I've been clearing my throat more and more. It's become a problem since I'm also a singer and it makes me hoarse. I've gone to multiple ENTs and have been scoped twice. All say everything looks fine. The one felt confident that it was acid reflux, but Zantac did not help in any way and I'm asymptomatic in every other way. My nephrologist was not comfortable with me taking a very large dose of Zantac to really test it. I then went to a gastroenterologist, and he felt confident that I DIDN'T have acid reflux. I'm questioning where to turn now. Has anyone had throat clearing issues while taking Losartan or as a side effect of kidney disease?

Welcome to HealingWell, LindenLady. My husband takes losartan for high blood pressure and he has a raspy voice quite often. A couple of the side effects of losartan are dry cough and "cold or flu like symptoms" in some people. You can Google side effects and read about this. It's possible that your throat-clearing issues are from this? Talk to the doctor who prescribed it. Maybe another medication would be better for you. Good luck!

I have IgA nephropathy and take losartan. I never had a problem with the dry cough until I started to take the generic form. It of course is 3 times cheaper than the brand name. I was once told by a rheumatologist that while the active drug is the same the fillers are not and in the odd person they cause a problem. Not saying this is your problem, but since you mentioned it, I am going to change back. Will let you know how it goes.

Interesting. I didn't realize that Losartan was generic for Cozaar! I'll talk to my nephrologist about that. I'm hesitant to switch meds since this has been working so well, aside from the possible throat clearing.

LindenLady, I am going to switch back for a while as a trial. I have been taking Cozaar for 15 years with no cough. Something changed in the last year. I changed pharmacy's and I also had pneumonia during this time so I don't know if this affected things. I know the generic pills are almost twice the size of the brand name, so they do have more filler. It is just a thought, but I know for me something is different. I am just trying to isolate what, as the cough is annoying and often makes my chest hurt as it is constant.
