My left ring finger has been black and blue and swollen for two days. The tip of the finger looks normal. The entire finger is a little numb, and the discoloration is not even. It's darker around the knuckles. Do any of you have any ideas as to what this could be caused by? There are no little puncture wounds like a spiker would leave and this is the only finger that is bruised. It's very strange.

That is very strange. Does it look like bruising? If you have decreased sensitivity/numbness, maybe you injured it without realizing it. Maybe you should call for an x ray. Judy

((Hugs)) I hope you call the doc in the morning and get this checked out. With the numbness, swelling and discoloration you must not be getting the proper blood flow to that finger for some reason. Let us know what you find out. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Sure sounds like your finger is at least partially cut off from circulation. Maybe it swelled in your sleep and with your ring on it made things worse. I wonder if it is related to your raynauds? 2 days is a long time for this to be going on. I agree with the others you need to get in to see your doctor.

Definately see the doctor. You do not want the tissue to start dying if it is circulation and if it is an injury it could be broken or dislocated and need treatment. Whatever it is you definately need someone to look at it.

Pat, just checking to see how your finger is doing. Did you end up calling your doc? Hopefully it's starting to get better - I would have no idea what would cause one finger to swell up and bruise like that.

Imagine my surprise to find that my index finger swelling and turn purple from top knuckle bone to base. I was reading and unaware until I went to pick up my glass of water. I panicked and my husband got on line and found your thread. I have read about 30 of the post today and am so glad I am not the only one this has happened to. I also went to Wickpedia and found the following information: Paroxysmal hand hematoma (also known as "Achenbach syndrome") is a skin condition characterized by spontaneous focal hemorrhage into the palm or the volar surface of a finger, which results in transitory localized pain, followed by rapid swelling and localized blueish discoloration. This is the only medical information I could find. There was nothing anywhere to make it sound life threating, so I guess we will all be okay. Ice did not do much for my swelling, but it has gone down some overnight and the purple is fading somewhat. Hope this info helps.
