Hi there I am new to the form and I have a lot of questions. Sevreal yrs ago a dr told me I had a high pos. for lupus and I never did much about it, every time I would get ill Dr.s would say this is due to lupus, rashes, unexplained fever, tiredness, sever adomanl pain... Well about 1mth ago I was very ill and put in the hospt. for some testing to figure out what was worng and what needed to be done. Long story short they said that I have stage 2 kidney disease (what is this) and sent me to a nephrologist and a rheumatoligest. the Dr's are saying I don't have lupus because the ana came back neg but I have been told by another dr that you can have lupus and have a neg ana. WHat is right? What do I do?

I am new to this site too, but boy I am not new to Lupus (SLE).  I also have Sjogrens, Celiac Spru and Pernicious Anemia.  I think that your doctor is wrong if he says there is nobody who has lupus with a negative ANA.  There are about 3 to 5% of lupus patients that are what is called Sero-negative and have a neg ANA.  I am not one of them.  I have seen others on other Lupus forums that have this going on that are diagnosed with Lupus.  I would find a different Rheumatologist.  You have to keep in mind that in order to be diagnosed with Lupus you have to have at least 4 of the criteria listed out of the ll criteria they list for Lupus.  I hope that you can get some of the answers.

Welcome Twilight!!

Glad you found us!!

You can ABSOLUTELY have lupus with a negative ANA. There are several here who do. And some of them have Lupus Nephritis (kidney disease).

If you click on the pencil in your post above, you can edit the title of your post and include "Stage 2 Kidney Disease - Please Help". That way, the gals with kidney issues will see your topic. Its really helpful to name your topic descriptively.

There is a link at the end of my signature "Lupus Criteria 4 of 11". This page explains lupus diagnosis.

Hopefully you will get some good responses from the members who know more about kidney issues.

Welcome to the forum!!

Hi twilight and welcome. I am so sorry to hear about your kidney disease - it must be scary for you. Like the others said, you can have lupus without a positive ANA and they have to take into account your positive labs from the past. I don't know if your nephrologist is going to do a kidney biopsy, but that would be one way to tell for sure if it is lupus that is attacking your kidneys.

Please let us know any other questions you have and we'll do our best to help - we're a supportive group. Take care and I'm glad you joined us.
