Hi everyone,
Just got back from an emergency visit to my rheumy.  I woke up at 3am with such muscle spasms, hives everywhere, swelling.  When I called to see what i could do to relieve the symptoms the doc had me come in.  This is the first time she was able to see me in this bad of shape.  Back of prednisone (oh yuck).  She drew blood and did a urinalysis.  I have no official dx yet but she suspects Lupus, I just don't have a positive ANA.  She was going to start me on plaquenil for the inflammation, but forgot I have been on it.  She is alarmed because it is doing nothing for me.
She said the next course of treatment is a chemo drug.  Wondering if anyone has any experience with this?

HI Debbie,
How long have you been on plaquenil?  It does take up to 6 months to kick in (from what I'm learning here).  Hives are very common in lupus. It's your immune system kicking in like there's an allergy, when there isn't one.  Classic.   I had hive issues before I was diagnosed too.  Hives and eczema.  Lovely combo shakehead .
Chemo meds are common and there are a few of us here on them.  I'm sure someone will come along and help you out more with your question.
Keep your chin up!!

I didn't realize how much plaquenil helped until my Rheumy took me off it. After just 6 days off it, I had huge hives everywhere and horrible fatigue. I didn't want to move. My AI started with huge hives all over my body about 4 years ago, fatigue was also present, but I thought it was due to the new mom thing. I take 10 mg of Claritin and 150 mg of Zantac both twice a day. That combined with the plaquenil seems to keep my hives under control. I had huge ones that would cover an area as large as the back of my thigh. After insane itching, they would hurt all the way to the bone. Just awful. Anyway with my second pregnancy is when the joint pain kicked in and just recently I started getting migranes 2-3 times a week and severe sun/heat sesitivity. Beware of anti-inflammatories!!! If I take ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, Ultram, Mobic and even aspirin my hives flare up really bad and I have to take prednisone to get them back under control. I wish you the best of luck with these horrible demons, I know how miserable it can be when you just want to crawl out of your skin. Thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mom- what did you eat that night for dinner?

Very important question.

I am wondering if you had any of the following...
-Bell Peppers
-Legumes : peanuts, lentils, peas, beans, chickpeas aka garbanzos or hummus
-Paprika or chili

That's what happens or would happen to me after I ate those things.

I had no official diagnosis either. I did the 24 hour urine tests...blood tests for months, took plaquenil...and I was given no answers except* hmmm maybe a stronger drug*

I figured out for myself--with no help from doctors but tons of help from this room( thx everyone :) ) that these foods were the real reason I was getting so sick.

I have been through allergery testing twice and have no allergies.  I have had three skin biopsy's also, negative.  It is frustrating.  My WBC is elevated and my CRP(shows inflammation) is up to 46 it should be five.  The SED rate is normal, ANA is normal.  Only positive thing I can say is I have a neuro and rheumy that won't give up.  The prednisone is helping to keep the rash at bay, but my joints hurt like h---.
Thanks for the advice.

Hi Debbie,

There are a couple of chemo drugs . . . but he might be talking about Methatrexate. It is generally taken once a week. Many of us have used it from time to time. I took it for about a year and it really helped with the fatigue. It didn't get rid of all my pain . . . but it was helpful.

It didn't make me nauseous, but I was sleepy for a day or so after taking it. I was built up to 20mg.

I hope this helps.
