I wonder if this sounds familiar to anyone because it's nothing like I've ever experienced or read about before....

I've been having this pain in my upper back on the left side. It's kind of a dull and sharp pain at the same time, if that makes sense. At first it felt like muscle tension, but in the last several days, it has gotten much, much worse. It's mainly in the left upper back in the shoulder blade area, but it also goes up into the base of my neck.

What's strange is that even though some of the pains have felt like muscle spasms, muscle relaxers have had no effect whatsoever (I've tried 3 different kinds and different strengths). Narcotic pain meds help take the edge off, but I'm still miserable. And another strange thing is that the pain has spread to my upper arm and under the arm, and sometimes in and under both arms.

Of course, I don't expect anyone here to diagnose it but just wonder if it sounds familiar to anyone and if you can give me your thoughts. I've seen my primary doctor twice about it — she prescribed the muscle relaxers and pain pills but is leaving the investigation up to my rheumatologist who I'm scheduled to see the first week in March.

I wondered about pleurisy, but there is no pain with breathing...just with everything else!

Hi Bee, I have had plurisy without he pain while breathing before. Then again I have terrible lungs so you can't go by me. Hopefully you rheumy can figure it out. If you had seen your dr. and they ruled out your heart then that is a good thing. Maybe try using a heating pad and ulternating with ice. every 15 mins. I use a heating pad on my chest all the time. It's helps some.
Hopfully someone can give you some better advice then me. Try to take it easy so you don't make it worse.

Its a site for gi and liver pain. I had pain there when my liver was really bad and it would not get better with drugs because they put more stress on the liver and inflame it more. Same if it is from gi pain. Mine felt like someone had punched me real hard under the shoulder blade and it ached in a spot like fist sized. It felt almost like a muscle pain, but it was my liver and resolved when it was treated and laying off drugs that might make it worse. You might ask about your last labs. I would definitely bring it up with the doc since the pain meds aren't working, esp. if it continues. It could be a sign of gi/liver irritation from a med. It takes a few months for drugs to bother my liver that much, the last new drug for me, prescribed months ago, was the culprit.

Hi bee!

I know you said you've tried some muscle relaxers, but has your doc ever given you baclofen? I've had a lot of back pain issues, an tried several muscle relaxers before I found one that worked...and the baclofen is great!
