Hello everyone...I have a question, my arthritus has come back and is almost disabeling at times. Some days when I get off work, I can hardly walk out the door due to the pain. My rhuemy has me taking tramadol(50-100mg) and when that doesnt work, has me taking darvocet. Well, neither of these are working. Currently my other lupus meds are 1500mg of cellcept and 15 mg of pred. I wake up and my fingers are 2 to 3 times their size. The carpal tunnel is back and this time in both hands, ankles feel like i have decided to walk on them sideways, well to make this short, the pain is all over. I have tried warm baths with epson salt, heating blanquet, heating patches and nothing is working. Do you have any suggestions of a pain med I can ask my rhuemy to take? I don't want to take anything like hydrocodone because it knocks me out. I guess I am looking for something like tramadol but maybe a tad stronger??? Is it possible for your body to adjust to immunosuppresants and cause it not to work somehow? This is the same thing Imuran did. Worked great at first and then slowly started not working...

Hi Amy, I am sorry to hear you are in so much pain. I have a lot of joint pain too and I am on Methotrexate, plaquenil, Piroxicam (NSAIDS) and flexerill (which is a muscle relaxer) along with the other meds in my signature. The ones I mentioned are strictly for joint pain. Other pain meds you could consider are: Lortab works well but knocks me out and makes me itch but it's the best by far for pain. I take tramsdol too and it's ok, better than darvocet but not as good as Lortab.

Can you take anti-inflammatory's? If so, maybe that could be a med you could try next. I sure hope you find something to help with your pain, I know how you feel as even with all the meds I am on I continue to have joint pain. (((hugs)))

Have you tried ultracet?  that is tramadol combined with acetimenophin (sp).  I was actually started on ultracet because my rheumy believed it to be stronger than tramadol alone.  I was taken off the ultracet and put on just tramadol when I started the mtx (because the acetimenophin taxes your liver as does mtx).  Like tramadol, it is non-narcotic.

Hi Amy, I'm so sorry you are in all that pain shakehead . I know pain can wear a person down in so many ways. I noticed you didn't mention plaqinil on your list of meds. Have they tried that? Maybe you can talk to your Rhumey about that, God help find the remedy. Tammy
