Hi everyone.  I have been reading a bit, and not quite understanding about the rice packs.  What are they for?  How do you use them?  Also, is there some special diet I should be following?  My doc never mentioned anything about that.  I do know though that past few weeks, my stomach always hurts- more on the left side (but on both) just beside the belly button.  I don't feel sick or anything just pain- and wondered if maybe it was because of my diet.  I do eat too much bread I know.  I also don't care for meat too much, but if it fixes my tummy, I'm all for it! yeah

Hi Superloopie,

The rice bags (grain bags, corn bags) are used by heating them in microwave or freezing them. I use them both ways and we use them often.

There is a post in the "Lupus Resources" thread (link at the end of my signature) which explains how to make them. It is the second to last post on that thread.

Sorry about your tummy . . . are you on any new meds? Sometimes plaquenil will cause some intestinal distress for the first couple/few weeks. Make sure to take it "with" your meals to minimize discomfort. Aside from meds . . . yes many of us do have some intestinal issues . . . sometimes we never know why and sometimes it is our immune system attacking the gut. Arghhh!!! Make sure and mention it to your doctor. I've thought about using magic marker on my body to mark off all the hurting spots . . . LOL . . . so that when I get to the doctor, he/she has a real road map to my pain!!

I hope you get some responses from some of the others about the intestinal issues.

Hi Loopie,

Thanks for reminding me about those rice packs. I need to make one, I love my heating pad but its not portable and sometimes hard to get it just right. The rice packs actually form to you so you are covered :)

There are specific things that people with Lupus should avoid. Night shade vegetables/fruits should be avoided especially alfalfa sprouts. Some people can't handle most legumes but I don't have too much of a problem personally. I have read that the best 'diet' to follow is the diet recommendations by the American Heart Association. Because we are at increased risk for heart problems, it makes sense. I have cut out fried foods and I hardly eat red meat anymore. I actually can tell the difference in the way I feel.

Make sure to let your doc know about your stomach pain. It may be related, it may not be but its still a concern. I suffered with colitis which completely went away and never came back so docs are still scratching their heads on that one but my GI coming to the conclusion that the Lupus was attacking my colon. I really couldn't find too much info on that theory though.
