I've mentioned that I have a stress fracture in my right foot. It's my third one in a few years. Second since I started taking prednisone. My bone density scan last week showed that I have osteopenia (which I knew) and my hips and spine have seen no change since my last scan three years ago. However, there's significant decrease in bone mineral mass in my left arm. I suppose that is because I don't use my left arm as much as my right, since I'm right handed.

I obviously need to do more weight training. I'm taking calcium with vit d every day, and actonel once a week. I eat a lot of dairy (am addicted to cheese). Don't know what else to do. I'm supposed to stay off my foot for the next month but after that I can get back to walking and riding my stationary recumbent bike.

What else do I need to be doing? This is a little disconcerting, to say the least.

Hi PattyLatty,

Sorry about your stress fracture. I have osteoporosis, and have been taking the once a month
Boniva 150mg, along with the calcium and vitamin D supplements. You seem to be doing all
the right things, weight training and increasing your calcium. You could ask the doc
about Boniva.

My rheumy has not put be on prednisone because of my osteoporosis. I am taking

Hope you get some answers

Patty, that really stinks about your stress fracture and bone loss. The prednisone is such a double edged sword. I hope the fracture isn't too painful and doesn't take too long to heal.
