I dont know if this relates, but my knees sometimes hurt very bad at night and if you feel under the knee cap as best you can you can feel the heat. It is lupus arthritis they say as the damage is minimal. I do test positive for rheumatoid factor at times and have family hx but hands not bad enough, not enough damage inthe right joints. I have problems with my hips and spine and there was some suggestion that some of the pain was nerve related from nerve root compression in lumbar, sacroiliac. Also, bengay helps, but there is a Volteren gel that is a muscle relaxant gel that you apply topically. It helps with my hard muscles, and also with tendonitis/arthritis in knees and shoulders. it can be as strong as taking a pill, but not so hard on the liver---and maybe not the kidneys, I don't know--because it is topical. The only topical muscle relaxant I know of. It is sedating.
Also, I sleep with a pillow under my knees and I think if it is not just right it really contributes to it, so I change that some when I have a bout of it.
I hope you feel better. Lidocaine patches do wonders too, and they can be cut and applied to knees and to your hips and spines. I don't know how hard they are on kidneys, but theyare a way for me to have relief with abad liver, they help alot at night. You may need a prior approval if on medicare because they are expensive. They help alot.
