Hey everyone!!! Well if everything goes like we are expecting with my blood work this month, I will probably start MTX on March 15, after my next rhuemy appointment. Just curious how everyone that has taken it has tolerated it? Experiences???

Hello,

I've been taking MTX at the full dosage for several years now.  However, when I first started (the first month) I basically felt as if I had the flu!  I had terrible body aches and a few hours after my dose I literallly could not stay awake. I did adjust to the MTX and was told to take the folic acid daily, however initially it wasn't enough, and the fatigue from the MTX was overwhelming to the point I had difficulty getting out of bed.  My doctor then prescribed Leucovorin (sp?) and it helped so much! I take it for my RA and it does wonders for my hip pain, and it also keeps my skin nice and clear.  Please make sure you drink plenty of water!!!!!!!!! Good luck, I hope it works for you.

Amy,
I started MTX back in December and so far it is not working for me, the just double my dose (injection once a week). I was told though that it can take awhile to kick in. I have not had any bad side affects except for being a bit more sleepy. smilewinkgrin

It can either be taken in pill form or given as an injection. I get the injection because I have stomach issues and pills are not my friend.. wink

Some individuals take it by injection, however it can be taken by mouth and generally you start out with 3 or 4 pills and if those are tolerated, then the dose is increased until the max dose of 8 pills are reached. (2.5mg).

Hi Amy, I have been on methotrexate for a few years and I tolerate it pretty well. When I first started it the inside of my mouth would be raw for a day or two and I would get a headache in the evening after I took it.
Good luck with it.
