Hi! Everyone,
I con't to have frequent and almost constant respiratory or skin infections. In the past 7 months I have been on antibiotics and high taper prednisone 4 times. For two weeks at a stretch. Could some of you tell me how often you have to take antibiotics? I am really getting scared by this, have a new diagnosis of degenerative osteoarthritis in my hip, and I know first hand what hospital acquired infections mean.
As always, your posts are a blessing in my life,
ps. Dear Forum Moderators, could I post a poll?

God knows, even if I don't....

In almost 5 years I have only had to take antibiotics for a recent sinus infection.  It has been tough to kick and I am on the 3rd a superantibiotic which seems to be working.  My doc says lots of people are experiencing this difficult to treat infection so hard to say if lupus or the other AI diseases I have complicate treatment but I don't think so.
MCTD (lupus, scleroderma, polymyositis).  Diagnosed 2005.  Kidney, liver, GI tract, dysphagia, raynauds, Barretts esophagus, quadriplegic in 2005.  Recovered and now active in skiing, tai, chi, hiking, golf.  Meds: prednisone 2.5mg, imuran 25mg, amlodipine, benazapril, omeprazole, potassium, folic acid, vitamins, maxide and various supplements and vitamins.
Remain optimistic and you can overcome the odds.

Hi sue, I have been on antibiotics for a year. I take them mon. wen. and friday. 250 azithromax. I take them because I could never shake an infection in my lungs. Even though I still get them quiet often they aren't as often as they used to be. When I get an infection anyway I get put on 750 levaquin. The doctor and I discussed it many times before deciding that it was better to take it then not to considering how bad I would get. Have you seen a pulm. about your lung problems? I can't remeber if I asked you that before or not.
God bless

Hi Suetoo,

I'm so sorry to hear about your infections....I've been having a lot of problems with skin infections lately too. But I'm on long-term antibiotic therapy for Lyme disease. I've been taking doxycycline, 400mg/day since January, and at the last visit to my Lyme doctor he added zithromycin 500mg/day. So I'm taking two VERY strong antibiotics right now. And he told me that I need to go on IV antibiotics eventually. sad

I was told that the thing to remember is to take LOTS of good probiotics products to prevent the development of drug-resistant strains of bacteria like C. diff. (Clostridium difficile). So I'm taking Florastor twice a day, which contains the species Saccharomyces boulardii (it's a special strain of yeast...both my Lyme doc and my rheumy insisted that I take this one), plus I just ordered a special probiotics product that has between 50 and 100 billion cells per capsule of acidophilus plus other strains that are helpful. I'm supposed to take that one three times a day!

Supposedly good, strong probiotics can keep you from developing the bad bacteria in your system while on antibiotics....if you have to be on them for a long time.

You're in my thoughts and prayers.....
