I've been getting mouth ulcers since I was a child.  Irritated red patches in my mouth or on my tongue with a white spot in the middle.  Now that I've been diagnosed, I just wondered more about them.

Right now I'm in the middle of what I'm guessing is a flare and possibly a big virus (its been over a month now and 2 antibiotics that haven't worked).  I also have gotten thrush a lot but that's usually only on the roof of my mouth.

Right now I have about 10 ulcers on the insides of my cheeks and gums and tongue.  There's also bright red bumps on the back of my throat.  My main question is, from everything I've read about lupus, it says mouth and nose ulcers/sores are common but painless....well these suckers hurt a lot!  I mean I can definitely deal but there's nothing painless about them.  Do any of you get these and is it the same or something different then a typical "lupus ulcer/sore"?

Thanks a bunch

sometimes my ulcers hurt sometimes they don't. I have heard similar over the years from others. I honestly think that when it is a small one you barely notice but if it gets big or if there are multiples it makes it worse.

Thanks for your response. It seems that this thing just keeps getting worse. I've got them on both sides of my cheeks on the inside of both my top and bottom lips, on the roof of my mouth, under my tongue and now all over where my tonsils USED to be (had a tonsillectomy), and on my tongue! At first I was thinking thrush but i started the antifungal when I started the antibiotic to be safe and its still worse. I hurts to even talk about I feel like its hard to breathe which makes me want to use my inhaler...but I heard that can make thins worse so I'm avoiding it.

Rinsing with sal***er, reducing sugar, lots of sugar free icecream and throat spray and cough drops and I have my regular pain medicine and the cough syrup with codeine which I try to get around my mouth before I swallow, but I can't ever remember having it this bad...they are so painful and I dont know what to do.

I do have lidocaine ointment and clobetasol ointment and saw some people using those to calm the sores, but I don' want to anything to irritate it? Honestly, it sounds trivial compared to some of our other problems but having about 30 open sores - its definitely comparable to my joint pain - though a different tupe of pain. I think I'm going to go get that canker sore stuff from the store. I have lidocaine ointment and clobetasol ointment here which I have heard some people use, but I don't want to make it worse! I have a call into the doc. but I'm pretty sure she's going to say wait it out because I don't think there's much more I can do.

Sounds like I'm gonna have a GREAT holiday :/

It seems like I've read somewhere that it can be part of a vitamin deficiency -- but have no idea what vitamin it could be. Today is *not* a brain day.

I think their are several things that could help. I bet Bioten mouthwash would at least give you a little relief...it's for Sjogrens & other dry mouth patients and has no alcohol in it - very soothing.

I wonder if you are low on Vitamin C.

I have had these several times although not to that extent. I am soo sorry for you and I like you say there really is nothing painless about it. I agree the smaller ones not so bad but the more you have and the larger they are the more painful they are. hope you find some releif soon.

Hi Penn,

I too had a problem with mouth sores caused by lupus. Mine were also painful in part because I think I always had so many at the same time and they lasted for 2+ weeks. I had some paste and magic mouthwash that I used but the most helpful thing is the 2-3mg of Folic Acid that I take daily. Talk to your doctor about it and hopefully you will get some relief soon! Take care
