Hi Ladies. I want to wish you much success with your weight loss surgery. My husband had lap band surgery and lost just a little weight but he had complications. The port where they would give him a fill developed a hole and all the fluid came out so immedietly he felt the no restriction in his stomach. They gave him another surgery to replace the port ,well a short time later his port somehow flipped in his stomach and now they cant put more fluid in. They want him to have another surgery to repair it but he said no more. He didnt do very well or make a good candidate because his head still told him to eat and he didnt follow the diet changes that are required to be successful.

My brother had gastric bypass and he also didnt lose weight because he just grazed all day instead of eating big meals so ended up consuming the same calorie wise.

I think that you ladies sound excited and are prepared for doing what you need to do. I know there are lots of people who have great success and have faith you will be another 2 to add to the list!

I lost weight before lupus by watching my diet, eating 5 small balanced meals a day, and walking 5 miles a day and shed 160 pounds. But now with using prednisone for 4 years and the great lack of exercise I have the battle once again so I know how you feel . Lets just never give up on ourselves and keep on trying. We are worth it!

Hi Vanae. I'm having gastric by-pass and have already bought some of the foods I'll need at first. I've also eliminated almost all diet soda, a real passion of mine, per their recommendation. I was a runner for 20 years (pre-lupus) so I hope I can draw on some of that will power to make my by-pass a success. Thanks for the stories! Love, Butterflake

I have just learned that our member, Redrose77, died Dec 12 from complications related to her lap band surgery. I have no further information and will let you know if I find any.

I just checked in on Butterflake (Donna) and she is still sedated & on the ventilator. However, they have been able to decrease the amount of oxygen - that's what happens as you are slowly weaned from the ventilator. So she is in slightly better shape than earlier in the week.

Please, please, please, no matter WHAT the doctors say -- DO NOT HAVE THIS SURGERY DONE - with our illnesses the risk is very much NOT worth it.

I can't believe this.  I'm not sure what to say either.  This is shocking.  I'm glad to hear that Donna is making positive steps in her recovery.

I too am very saddened by this news. I have thought often about her and wondered how her surgery went. I was always watching for a post from her. Makes me sad for her children and family. Such loss in her quest to improve her quality of life. My thoughts and prayers for her family.

I have been able to find out just a very few details, but there doesn't appear to be an online obituary anywhere.

Lynnwood, thank you so much for taking the time to share this with us. This is very sad. Redrose was such a sweet person that had such a positive and uplifting nature about her. I know we will all miss her deeply... my heart aches for her family.

Hi,

It is a blessing, not only to get to know each other on this forum, but to care for each other through this forum. In the sad times, and the better times. I appreciate being told of her passing, as I too, worry about people I "met" when I first found this site. I will miss her, too. I am grateful to our forum moderators and Peter, for their comittment to both beginnings, and endings.

Ok I am finally back. Sorry. I am Redrose's best friend. Let me answer some of the questions for all of you.

Her husband says he didn't know what happened and says she went to the hospital for the surgery. She was doing fine afterwards and was sent home. Then within a few days she was vomiting and had diarrhea. Redrose couldn't keep anything down, so he took her back to the hospital. They kept her there for a week and she was scoped they said they found a pocket of infection as well as a hole in her stomach. Hospital said the hole was supposedly caused by the prednasone. The doctor placed a stint and she was sent home next day. Two days at home she seemed to be doing well, a bit tired but nothing her husband was worried about. Later she said she was thirsty so her husband helperd her to get some water and she said she was nauseous and had the onset of a migraine. So he gave her some medicine for that and put her to bed. He checked on her a few times , and tried to get some sleep. He said the power had been out so that was all he could do. During the night he went to check on her and she wasn't breathing, so he tried to do cpr, but wasn't able to help her. He called 911, medics arrived and checked her, and he was told she had already passed.

I left out the rest of the email as it was personal, between him and I. Again I do apologize. I did personally join the board for these very reasons. I had spoken to him about where she was online as we both knew she was active in groups and I knew she had a journal somewhere etc. He mentioned "Healingwell" and I googled it and it came up this site.

So let me catch up so far - We are still waiting on toxicology reports and the autopsy has not found anything. We are not knowing why this has happened. I know Lynnwood is advising not to do this and advocating caution and it is a good idea. YET - we all should know that Redrose's doctor did give Kait a clean bill of health to go with this surgery. Kait wanted this to TRY to prolong a few more years for the kids. Yes, I had my own reservations and YES, her husband loved her no matter what, but we all know how stubborn Kait was anyway ha ha. We cannot fault her for wanting to be around longer for her kids and we cannot fault her for wanting to eliminate her weight to alliviate health concerns and prolong her health so she could have years to her life for her kids and be with her loved ones.

Yet, I guess it was not meant to be - so none of us have her anymore and I do not have my best friend anymore. And I do miss her every day.

Thank you for the additional information. One of the biggest issues with lap band surgery for those of us with Lupus has to do with the number of medications we have to take to control our diseases. And the power of these medications as well.

Unless our meds are ground up and taken more gradually in a powder form, the relatively huge amount of medication taken at once in our normal meds is too much for the newly formed stomach and causes issues rather quickly.

This is almost identical to what happened with the stomach of another HW member. They found an infection and a small ulcer just below her new stomach -- still in the area where the surgery invaded. And she *was* taking it easy with her meds, but thought it was safe to stop a probiotic as she'd been doing well. Turns out the probiotic was MORE necessary than usual with the smaller stomach. Donna has now been in the hospital on a respirator for over 3 weeks.

PS. In both cases the doctors were fully approving of the lap-band surgery, and in no way was I suggesting anyone was "at fault" for wanting this done - I know both did extensive research and made sure ALL their doctors agreed before going ahead.

As always, every post on these forums is the personal opinion of the poster, and is not to be constructed as medical knowledge or anything "professional". Always check with your own doctors before making any decisions.

darn it!! I knew it was the doc's fault!! I knew it!!! See what prolonged them doing the autopsy for SO LONG is the doc didn't sign off on the certificate (she still hasn't been buried as of yet as they are still doing toxicology and haven't released the body yet) so everything has been a mess. So this is why there isn't any obit yet. But when they did do autopsy they didn't find anything. Well of course, they didn't find anything, they waited too long. So I'm sure toxicology won't find anything period. It's been way too long. I won't bother telling her husband the information as he did say he wanted to move on, but I know he misses her so much too. I know Kait talked about probiotic meds to me for a long time with migraines and yeast infections especially with heartburn and assorted other issues, but I do not have Lupus like she did. I just know she worried over me and was always mindful to fuss over me like she did all of you too. I am taking online classes at the moment, so I will be back and forth and will continue to be on the forum and will probably come across many of her posts and will more than likely reply to them even though they are old ha ha.
